Carnegie Mellon University

Entrepreneurship at the Tepper School and the Swartz Center

Education, engagement, collaboration, and funding opportunities deliver an exciting experience for startup success alongside entrepreneurial learning and practice.

Our innovation ecosystem contributes to an environment in which top student and professional talent generates and pursues groundbreaking ideas and then transforms those innovations into viable commercial businesses. The work that originates here — from software engineering and robotics to advanced materials, design, and everything in between — is driven by people whose thinking knows no boundaries.

The hub of entrepreneurship at Carnegie Mellon is the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship — located within the Tepper Quad — a campus-wide center for innovation that brings together business, technology, and design.

Deeply collaborative and extraordinarily supportive, the center’s success stories range from tech to health care to energy. Duolingo, Wigle Whiskey, and Fifth Season are just a few.

Entrepreneurship at the Tepper School

Education in Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurial education is more than learning how to start a business. The academic programming of the Swartz Center is led by the Donald H. Jones Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, a center-within-a-center that ensures graduates have the necessary skills, training, and career options so they can apply their academic experience within any entrepreneurial environment.

Entrepreneurship MBA Track

The Entrepreneurship MBA track provides students with the learning, experiences, and support necessary for leadership and innovation. Students collaborate closely with faculty, researchers and other students at top-ranked Carnegie Mellon programs, including engineering, product development, computer science, robotics, and design.

Startup Culture

Start a venture. Join an emerging company. Lend entrepreneurial depth to organizations. Our students do all of the above after graduation. Carnegie Mellon has launched more than 400 startups in the last decade. Among the hundreds of companies launched are ModCloth (acquired by Walmart in 2017); Simple (acquired by BBVA in 2014); Flip Video Camera (acquired by Cisco in 2009); RoBotany; and Wigle Whiskey.

Cross-Campus Collaboration & the Tepper Quad

A campus-wide interdisciplinary center, the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship will accelerate its activities with the opening of the Tepper Quad, the physical campus hub for the university’s entrepreneurial activities, including networking and mentoring opportunities, alumni panels, and investor showcases.
