Carnegie Mellon University

Lactation Rooms

The university's lactation rooms (and other non-registered or private rooms) are located throughout campus and office buildings. The lactation rooms provide a private space for employees, students and guests who need to express milk while at the university. On this page:

Access and Schedule Lactation Rooms

To request access to the lactation rooms, please complete and submit the Lactation Room Access Form. This will grant you swipe card access to all campus lactation rooms as well as access to the Google Calendars to schedule time in any of the rooms.

Campus lactation rooms must be reserved prior to use. Once access is granted, use the links in the table below to access the calendar for the room you wish to use. Please note that you will only be able to add and view these calendars if you have been granted lactation room access by the Family Care Team. For more information on how to access and use the calendars, please see the Lactation Room Scheduling System Guide [pdf] or email the Family Care Team with questions.

PRIVACY NOTICE: Due to the limitations of the Google Calendar system, if you make an appointment to reserve a lactation room, your name and appointment date/time will be visible to other users of the Google Calendar system. If you have scheduling questions or concerns, please contact the Family Care Team.

Guidelines for Lactation Room Use

  • You are responsible for working with your supervisor to arrange for break time to pump and may contact the Office of Human Resources for questions regarding break time.
  • Visitors must have a CMU sponsor to use the space.
  • Lactation rooms are to be used for the sole purpose of expressing milk. If rooms are found to be used by individuals requesting access for purposes other than that listed here, access may be revoked.
  • When scheduling time in lactation rooms, keep appointments 45 minutes or less, do not schedule more than two months in advance, and be courteous and cancel reservations if you no longer need them.
  • If you are requesting lactation room access for recurring events, or for visitors who may be visiting campus on multiple sets of dates, please complete a Lactation Room Access Form for each occurrence.
  • Please refrain from requesting dates for visitors and events that are more than two months from the date of your request.
  • Multiple users have access to the lactation rooms. Please display the "Lactation Room in Use" Door Sign [pdf] to identify that the room is in use.
  • Carnegie Mellon does not provide pumping equipment. Should you choose to leave any items in the room, know that these are not the responsibility of Carnegie Mellon.
  • Please keep the space neat and orderly. If you notice that dispensers are out of stock or if there is a cleaning issue, please report the issue to Facilities Management Services.

Cleaning and Sanitization

All lactation room users are expected to clean up after each use. This is not only out of respect for the next user, but to prevent contamination and illness transmission. Allow enough time during each visit to clean the pump equipment of breast milk spills and dispose of trash properly. Antibacterial wipes and paper towels are provided for cleaning spills; we do not recommend you use these products to sanitize your personal equipment.

Please keep the space neat and orderly. If you notice that dispensers are empty or if there is a cleaning issue, please report it to Facilities Management Services.

Mamava Lactation Pods

Mamava podThe Office of Human Resources has partnered with Highmark, UPMC and the Graduate Student Assembly to purchase three Mamava XL Mobile Lactation Pods, placed around campus. These pods are freestanding suites for nursing parents to pump or breastfeed. Each unit includes comfortable benches, a fold-down table, an electrical outlet for a breast pump and a door that can be locked for privacy.

The units are mobile and can provide a lactation solution in buildings where there is no dedicated lactation room or where the demand exceeds the available capacity. Mamava Pods do not require a reservation, so there are no scheduling calendars for these spaces. An access code is provided when you register for room access or at the Cohon University Center Welcome Desk.
