Zoom Course Instructions

Zoom has recently made some changes to their program and things may look different than you are used to. Please be patient as we adjust to these changes together! Here are updated steps to join your courses on Zoom!

Zoom Codes and Passwords

Zoom Meeing IDs and Passwords are sent to those registered for a Zoom Class by noon one business day before a course begins. If you register for a course last minute, you are responsible for emailing the Osher office to obtain the login information.

How to Access Zoom Courses

Please refer to the guide(s) below to see how to access a Zoom course. There are differences in how to log into the meeting as a Member or a Study Leader, so be sure to follow the proper steps.

Computer or Laptop

When accessing a course from a computer or laptop, we recommend the following steps:
  1. Open your internet browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge).
    Example icons:
  2. Type the following into the address bar: join.zoom.us
  3. Enter the meeting ID provided by Osher. Click Join.
  4. You will be prompted to put in your name and email address. Click "Register."
  5. Enter the meeting password provided by Osher. Click Join.

Phone or Tablet

When accessing a course from a phone or tablet, we recommend the following steps:
  1. If you have yet to do so, download the Zoom app from the App store or Google Play store.
    Example icon:
  2. Click on Join/Join a Meeting.
  3. Enter the Meeting ID provided by Osher and make sure you display your first and last name.
  4. Enter the meeting password and then click "Continue."

Please note: In order to teach a Zoom course, we require that Study Leaders have access to a desktop or laptop computer (Microsoft Surface Pro is considered a laptop). Do not use a phone or tablet (iPhone, iPad, Android).

  1. Go to Zoom’s website: zoom.us
  2. Click “Sign In” within the black bar in the upper right corner.
    • You must Sign In to Zoom with the email adress and password that you used to connect you to the Osher Zoom License before joining the meeting. The email address is what connects you to the Host privledges.
  3. Once you have logged into your Zoom account, click “Join” from the right hand side of the white bar at the top of the screen.
  4. Enter the ID and password for your course
  5. To make sure you have joined the correct meeting, click on the icon that is an “I” inside of a
circle in the upper left of your video. The title of the meeting should be your class title.

To make sure you have entered the meeting under the correct account, you should see an icon
of a shield in your Meeting Controls (toolbar) titled “Security.” If you do not see that shield, then
you are not signed in using the proper account and you are not the host.

Host Controls

The Security button (shield icon) gives you the following controls:

  • Lock Meeting – Optional. You may lock the class to latecomers if you choose.
    • Note: If you lock the class and a student leaves for any reason, they will not be able to
      get back in.
  • Enable Waiting Room – This means you must let each person in; they cannot join without you
letting them in. This is not recommended if you have a large class.
    • Allow Participants To:
    • Share Screen – Choose this if you want your students to be able to share their screen
      with the class.
    • Chat
    • Rename Themselves – Everyone must be able to show their full name.
    • Remove – If a participant is behaving inappropriately, click this to find and select that person
and remove them from the class. They will not be notified ahead of time that this is occurring.
Instead, they will simply no longer be in the class, and they will not be able to re-enter.
