Publishing to an External Server

CMS sites may publish to an external server given certain conditions are met. An external server is defined as a web hosting environment outside of the University CMS Team's management and managed by an official campus unit.

  • CMS sites hosted by the University CMS Team contain a www.cmu.edu URL
  • CMS sites hosted on external servers are typically configured to use sub-domains of a parent unit (example: privacy.cs.cmu.edu). Newly established third-level domains (example: ml.cmu.edu) require approval from the Marketing & Communications division.

Publishing to an external server requires coordination between the University CMS Team and a technical lead who is responsible for administering the external server.

Conditions for Publishing to an External Server

  1. Upon requesting a site launch, a technical lead must be designated. This individual will accept responsibility of administering the external server from the initial publish connection and throughout continued maintenance of the content sync functionality. A new technical lead must be designated if the initial one no longers holds the role.
  2. It is the responsibility of the site owners, site managers, or technical lead to obtain and configure a domain name for the site on the external server.
  3. If any changes are made in the external hosting environment (e.g., installation of new servers, decommissioning of old servers, transfer to Campus Cloud) it is the technical lead's responsibility to inform the University CMS Team of the changes and provide new configuration settings.

The University CMS Team is not responsible for the following:

  • Configuring the external server including any Apache configuration and directory ownership
  • Setting up security certificates on the external server
  • Installing redirects on the external server
  • Finding a new technical lead to administer the external server
