How to Use NotebookLM

NotebookLM is an AI-driven research assistant from Google that helps you organize and synthesize information from your documents, notes, and media. It enables you to ask questions, generate summaries, and create mind maps based on your uploaded materials. The tool is available through CMU’s Google Workspace for Education.

Log In

  1. Visit notebooklm.google.
  2. Log in using your Andrew userID and password, then authenticate with Duo.

IMPORTANT: When you log in with your CMU account, Google does not use your prompts and responses for AI training, and uploaded documents are not retained beyond your session.

CMU's Data Classification Guidelines still apply—do not enter sensitive, private, or restricted data.

CMU students, faculty, and staff already have access to NotebookLM when they log in with their Andrew accounts.

NotebookLM allows you to upload Google Docs, Google Slides, PDFs, web URLs, YouTube videos, and audio files.

Yes. When you log into NotebookLM with your Andrew userID and password, you are protected under the terms of the CMU Google Workspace for Education agreement. You can rest assured that your data will not be used to train Google’s AI modules, will not be mines, and is approved for FERPA-compliant use.

Yes, you can share notebooks with both individuals or Google Groups within the CMU community.

With NotebookLM, you are limited to up to 100 notebooks, with up to 50 sources and 500,000 words each. In addition, there are daily limits of 50 chat queries and 3 audio generations.
