How to use Microsoft Copilot Chat

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can use Microsoft Copilot Chat at CMU?
CMU students, faculty, and staff already have access to Microsoft Copilot Chat when they log in with their Andrew accounts.
Is my data in Microsoft Copilot Chat secure?
Yes. When you use Microsoft Copilot Chat with your CMU Microsoft account, your data remains protected under Microsoft’s enterprise agreements with CMU. Data is not used to train Microsoft’s public AI models and remains FERPA-compliant.
How do I make sure I’m using the secure, CMU-approved version of Microsoft Copilot Chat?
To ensure you're using the enterprise-protected version of Microsoft Copilot, do not click “Login with Google”—even if you enter your Andrew email. This logs you into a personal Copilot account that lacks CMU’s security protections.
Instead, you must click “Sign in with Microsoft” and use your Andrew credentials. This routes you through CMU’s enterprise system.
If you’ve already signed in with Google by mistake:
- Log out of Copilot.
- Clear your browser cookies and cache.
- Return to https://m365.cloud.microsoft/chat/ and click Sign in with Microsoft.
- Log in with your Andrew userID and password.
- If you have logged in correctly, a green shield appears in the upper right corner. When you hover over it, the message "Enterprise Data Protection applies to this chat" will display.
Using the wrong login method could expose university-related data. Always verify you're accessing CMU’s secure environment.
