Enterprise Communication Transformation

The Enterprise Communications Transformation initiative, led by a collaboration between Computing Services and University Communications & Marketing (UCM), introduces a standardized platform (Emma) to enable the following:

  • Consistent and branded communications.
  • Centralized audience management.
  • Data-driven engagement strategies.

The pilot phase is a crucial step toward improving cooperation among departments and enhancing communication across the university.

What This Means for You

This initiative is designed for:

  • Departmental communicators.
  • Administrative and academic units managing large distribution lists.
  • Teams requiring compliant, branded messaging at scale.

Pilot Phase

Participants in the pilot will help shape the future of enterprise communications at CMU. We appreciate the assistance of our pilot partners in formalizing the process and standards for this tool and its datasets. The pilot partners include:

  • University Communications and Marketing (UCM)

  • Human Resources (HR)

  • School of Computer Science (SCS)

  • Dietrich College

  • Facilities, Infrastructure, & Risk Management (FIRM)

What to Expect in the Pilot

The pilot will follow a structured approach that includes the following steps:

  1. Onboarding and Training: Participants will receive access to the platform, templates, and guidance.
  2. Active Use: Departments will implement real communication campaigns.
  3. Continuous Feedback: Input will be collected through structured channels.
  4. Evaluation and Scale Readiness: Insights will be used to refine the enterprise rollout.
Function Responsibility
Computing Services Governance of the application, access management, integration procedures, and technical support.
University Communications & Marketing (UCM) Brand governance, template standards, and best practices for communication.
Pilot Departments Effective campaign execution, managing the audience, and actively participating in feedback and refinement.
Emma (App Partner) Offers application training, guidance, and technical expertise; assists users by addressing platform-related inquiries while facilitating CMU’s communication transformation—not governing institutional processes or policies.

Communication Standards

To ensure consistency and alignment:

  • All communications must use approved branded templates.
  • Audience lists must align with data governance standards.
  • Messaging should follow established institutional communication guidelines.

These guardrails are essential to maintaining quality and trust across CMU communications.

Feedback and Continuous Improvement

Your input is important for the success of this pilot. Feedback collected during the pilot will directly inform:  enhancements, template and workflow improvements, and governance and onboarding models for the full-scale rollout. Please share your questions, insights, and recommendations.
