Google Tools Update: Spring 2025

At CMU, we rely on Google Workspace for Education to power our productivity. From Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides to Drive and Calendar, faculty, staff, and students across campus work with Google tools every day to accomplish their goals.

Google constantly releases updates to improve its tools. Check out a few of our favorite updates since the fall, and learn how to use new features to enhance your work, learning, and teaching.

Drone Videography Now Available

Media Services now offers drone videography, allowing you to capture high-impact cinematic footage of campus like never before. Visit the Video Selection Guide to learn more and review recent price changes.

Public Cloud Services at a Discount

Computing Services maintains agreements with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure that allow you to access public cloud services at a discounted rate.

Replacing Cisco Jabber with the Webex App

This spring, we’re retiring Cisco Jabber and transitioning faculty and staff to the Cisco Webex app, a more modern platform that offers messaging, video meetings, calling, and file sharing all in one app.

Mac Labs Now Run macOS Sequoia

Over the holiday break, we upgraded the operating system on all Apple computers in computer labs across campus to macOS 15 (Sequoia), Apple’s latest operating system.

 Generative AI Tools

Ask Gemini to Interact with Your Email, Calendar and More

Leverage Google’s Gemini AI model to find information in Mail, summarize documents in Drive, create or edit events in Calendar, and more by enabling Gemini extensions.

Ask the Right Questions with Our Prompt Library

Excited to use generative AI tools, but unsure how to ask the right questions? Explore our new prompt library, which includes prompt ideas for research, content creation, event planning, and more.

Filter Software Options by Artificial Intelligence

Companies release new generative artificial intelligence tools almost weekly, so it can be hard to know what’s available to you at CMU. Visit our software catalog and filter by artificial intelligence to find out!

 Prepare for the Semester

Ice Out Threats

Take a moment to secure your devices, accounts, and files and protect yourself and the university from cybersecurity threats this academic year. Remember, security is our shared responsibility!

New Device?

If you have a new smartphone or tablet, our new-device checklist can help you update DUO, lock down your security, and connect to wireless.

Record Your Name

Our names are critical to our sense of self. Learn how to enter your preferred name and record how to pronounce it to help others address you correctly.

 Graduation is Coming Soon

Graduation is Right Around the Corner

It’s never too early to start preparing for graduation! Your student account will expire soon after you leave the university, and you'll lose access to CMU resources.

Learn how to transition your cloud storage files, personal websites, email, and other work so that you have what you need to succeed in your next steps. You can begin moving your services at any time, and we recommend that you start early.

Our Communities

Computing Services engages with the campus through several topic-based communities, helping to connect individuals in similar roles or with similar interests and share updates.

Google Product Education Program

The Google Product Education Program (PEP for short) is a new platform for the CMU community to share best practices and the latest features of Google products, connecting Google enthusiasts on campus. Learn more about PEP and join us for an upcoming webinar!

Digital Accessibility Office

Making content accessible is a requirement and a shared responsibility. Learn how to create accessible videos, documents, websites, and data visualizations through our on-demand video library. Look for more training opportunities in the spring.

Project Management and Change Management Centers of Excellence

The Business Innovation Office (BIO) supports two Centers of Excellence for CMU staff: the Project Management Center of Excellence (PM CoE) and the Change Management Center of Excellence (CM CoE). Both centers will provide training in 2025. This training aims to improve the culture around these areas at CMU and help staff support key organizational goals.
