Timeshare Linux
Timeshare Linux provides remote, command-line access to a load-balanced Linux system running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS that allows multiple concurrent users. Most software available in the campus Linux computer labs (e.g., MATLAB, SAS, Maple, etc.) can be accessed through Timeshare Linux.
Note: Timeshare Linux is only accessible on the Pittsburgh campus or VPN.
Timeshares can be accessed through:
- Secure Shell (SSH) and Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP)
- Visual Studio Code
Note: You may need to turn on remote.SSH.lockfilesinTmp in the settings.
Provides access to:
- Your AFS home directory for shared file storage
- Multiple software titles and development environments
Note: The Linux timeshares should be used for coursework, not as high-performance computing devices. Students should check with their departments to see if they have High Performance Computing (HPC) machines or utilize Research Computing resources. These devices are rebooted daily and are a shared resource. Excessive use of CPU time on the shared resources may violate the Computing Policy.
Eligibility
- Students, faculty, and staff
Note: You cannot install software requiring elevated or administrator privileges.
