Network Registration for IT Staff/Student Organizations

Departmental IT support staff and Student Organizations are responsible for maintaining system information for their group using the Network Registration System (NetReg). For security reasons, it is important that computers and outlets are properly assigned to those who use them. If necessary, Computing Services may need to identify owners of computers and outlets in instances where the Carnegie Mellon Computing Policy is violated. All departmental IT support staff will receive important network information for the computers registered in their department as well as warnings for any misuse.

You will need the hardware addressbuilding location and subnet for the computer you are registering.

  1. Go to http://netreg.net.cmu.edu. Read the page instructions. Download the Root Certificate, if prompted.
  2. Click Enter.
  3. Log in with your Andrew userID and password.
  4. Select Register New Machine.
  5. Do one of the following:
    • CMU Wireless (not CMU-SECURE) - select LegacyWireless from the Network and click Continue.
    • Wired - select a location from the Building, click Continue and select the Subnet.
  6. Enter the Basic Information:
    • Hostname (optional) - enter a name for your computer.
    • Domain Name - select andrew.cmu.edu unless your group is listed.
    • Hardware address - enter your computer's hardware address.
    • Affiliation - select your affiliation.
  7. Click Continue. The following displays:
    • Registration failed - a red box appears indicating the problem.
    • Registration successful - your registered computers are listed.

Please allow at least 30 minutes for the information to propagate to the network.

The process of transferring a computer's network registration is restricted to the departmental administrator for the group's registered computer. If you do not have a departmental administrator:

  • Request that the person currently registered to the computer delete their registration and then register the computer in your name
