When I first arrived as a scared, nervous first-year at CMU I had no idea what was in store for me academically. I quickly realized just how immersive and hands-on the experience was. The coursework was rigorous (looking at you organic chemistry and biochem), but it constantly pushed me to think critically and solve problems in creative ways. From the happiness I felt when I finally solved a complicated reaction to the lab projects that brought theoretical concepts to life, every challenge reinforced my passion for science.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my time in MCS has been the opportunity to engage in research and lab classes. Beginning in the fall of my first year, I took a Fronteris Analysis and Discovery in Biological Sciences which exposed me to the world of biology research and techniques. This class culminated in a student-led final project in which we designed a new oligonucleotide scheme. In the fall of my second year, I worked in a lab that studied motor circuits located in the basal ganglia using a Parkinsonian mouse model. In this lab, I had the opportunity to perform brain surgery on mice and run my own behavioral trials. The professors and graduate students I worked alongside weren’t just experts in their fields—they were also deeply invested in pushing boundaries and fostering curiosity.

Beyond academics, being part of the MCS community has shaped me in ways I cannot even describe. The friends I have met through my classes and MCS community have grown into my closest circle and I am so grateful to have spent the past four years with them all. From cramming into the photo booth at MCS ball, to late-night bike rides, to taking on carnival together, some of my favorite memories involve the MCS community. Even during orientation week, I was able to connect with a peer in my EUREKA class and our community of friends has grown exponentially since then, along with the amazing times we spent together.

Looking back, studying in MCS at CMU has been incredibly rewarding and I would do it again in a heartbeat. It has strengthened my problem-solving skills, expanded my research interests, and surrounded me with the greatest group of friends I could ask for. For anyone considering MCS, my advice is to embrace the challenges, seek out people and opportunities beyond the classroom, and never stop asking questions.
