What You Won’t See on a Campus Tour… but I Wish You Could!
by Angie Y.
Hello there! My name is Angie, and I’m currently a second-year studying business administration and statistics. I have been a Tartan Ambassador for two semesters now, and as much as I love our campus tours, there are so many more things I wish people got to see when they visit!
First, there are so many more cool spaces on campus that we don’t have the time to see on our tour – like the fabrication labs or media room, where students get to use the Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology (IDeATe) spaces to create personal passion projects and get creative. Not far from the main campus, the Mellon Institute has a lot of laboratories where students will do research and take classes. Its distinct pillars are gorgeous, and I love admiring the architecture of the building. We also have a newly opened Robotics Innovation Center that’s part of a greater initiative of redefining Pittsburgh as a point of innovation and creativity, and we get to be at the forefront of it.
Even more, we often talk about the wonderful communities that shape our every day, and I wish you could see how special they make my experience. Since my first semester, I have been a part of a women’s ultimate frisbee team and the Undergraduate Consulting Club. I couldn’t imagine my time here without them. Before coming to college, I was always expecting a distinct separation between my academic and professional development activities and my social life. In all of these, I found families that have grown out of organizations like this. I’m truly lucky to have friends I can participate in competitive case competitions with and still have such a fun, goofy time together working on it.
There isn’t a weekend that goes by without something incredible happening on campus. Students are constantly creating, whether it's working on a buggy or booth, or the various organizations working on dance shows, fashion shows, performances and so much more. Some of my favorite things to do is to cheer on my friends in all of these events. One of my favorite events is Dancer’s Symposium, where dance organizations on campus get to showcase different styles. It always brings a big smile on my face to watch my friends fulfill their passions and to see all the things students do when not in class.
I hope this blog helped you to “see” a little more about campus life and Carnegie Mellon University. If you ever visit us on campus, always keep an eye out for what’s happening beyond the tour!
