Kevin Haworth Launches Writers House Pittsburgh
Writers House Pittsburgh, an urban writers residency, is launching in September, hosting four residents for the 2020-2021 term. The initiative is being co-founded by Kevin Haworth, a Lecturer in the Writing & Communication program, and Maggie Messitt, a Mellon Fellow at Denison University and MFA faculty at Goucher College. Writers House Pittsburgh is a year-long residency supporting true storytellers with housing stability, community, and mentorship in an unpredictable time.

"Reliefs II" Installed in Tepper Building Quad
A collaborative mural entitled "Reliefs II" has been permanently installed in the Tepper Building Quad this summer. This piece serves as an extension from and interpretation of the Robert Lepper piece in GSIA. Located on the North Atrium Wall, this artwork is a joint piece created by Jim Daniels and Mark Baskinger and fabricated by Dee Briggs. Jim is the Thomas Stockham Baker University Professor of English and Mark serves as an Associate Professor in the School of Design. Dee is a local and nationally recognized artist who has also taught in the School of Art and the School of Architecture and Design.

Celebration Honors English Department Graduates of 2020
On Sunday, May 17, the Department of English hosted a departmental graduation celebration for the Class of 2020. Almost 100 devices connected to the session with more than that number of people participating on shared devices. Department of English head and professor Andreea Ritivoi addressed graduates and their loved ones. Marika Yang was the featured student speaker for the celebration.

Spring Book Salon 2020 Leverages Virtual Space to Gather Community
The CMU Department of English held its Spring 2020 Book Salon on April 29, in virtual format. The event engaged with a virtual audience using the Zoom platform, synchronously gathering its community from around the world. Moderated by Department of English head Andreea Ritivoi, the featured presenter was Jane Bernstein, professor in the Creative Writing Program at CMU English.

Jim Daniels Releases Anthology “Respect: The Poetry of Detroit Music”
Jim Daniels, Thomas Stockham Baker University Professor of English, recently released “Respect: The Poetry of Detroit Music” (Michigan State University Press, 2020). Co-edited with M.L. Liebler, the work is the first anthology of its kind to celebrate the poems and lyrics of Detroit’s singular artistic and musical history.

Kevin Haworth, Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor, Celebrates Local Pittsburgh Students and New Edition of “Far Out All My Life”
Kevin Haworth, visiting assistant teaching professor in English, recently re-launched his memoir of experimental creative nonfiction “Far Out All My Life.” Pittsburgh's local BatCat Press, located in Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, published the book and featured student readers at the book event in late November 2019.

Film & Visual Media Studies' Ralph Vituccio Wins First Place at Rome's VRE Fest with "Haenyeo"
Haenyeo, a virtual reality film produced by Ralph Vituccio, associate teaching professor for the Entertainment Technology Center and the English Department's Film & Visual Media Studies, won first place in the Best Virtual Reality Experience category at VRE Fest in Rome. The film also was directed by CMU alumnus Jaehee Cho.
