Upper-Class Housing Options

Upper-class students residing in campus housing can select from a variety of either semi-suite, suite style, and apartment style rooms, which all have semi-private bathrooms. All buildings and room types are subject to availability - some buildings and room types may fill quickly and become unavailable. Approximately one-third of upper-class bed spaces are in residence halls, with the remaining two-thirds in apartment style accommodations.  Please note that "traditional" style rooms are not available to upper-class students.

Upper-Class Room Types and Roommate Groups:

  • Semi-Suites - Rooms that are filled by individuals selecting alone or "by the room" (roommates can be pulled in to the bedroom but not to any adjoining bedrooms)
  • Suites - Suites are multi-bedroom units that are filled "by the suite" (all rooms within the suite can, and must, be filled with roommates from the roommate group); suites are not available to individuals selecting by themselves unless suite rooms remain available at Extended Selection
  • Apartments - Multi-bedroom apartments are filled "by the apartment" (all rooms with the multi-bedroom apartment can, and must be filled with roommates from their roommate group); One-bedroom Apartment Doubles and Studio Double apartments can be filled by individuals selecting alone or "by the room" (roommates be pulled into the bedroom within that particular apartment, but not to any other nearby apartments)

Residence Hall Options

Upper-class students residing in residence hall rooms can select from either semi-suite or suite style rooms, which both have have semi-private bathrooms. All buildings are subject to availability - some buildings and room types may fill quickly and become unavailable. Approximately one-third of upper-class bed spaces are in residence halls.

Apartment Options

Approximately two-thirds of all upper-class residents live in apartment-style housing, offering a variety of living styles including studios (two occupants), one-bedroom (two occupants), and two-bedroom (two or three occupants) options. However, there are also some five occupant houses (Roselawn Houses), as well as some four occupant apartment options (Margaret Morrison Apartments). Forbes Beeler Apartments are primarily eight occupant apartments, that will be filled with two groups of four.

Please note that all multi-bedroom units will be made available only to roommate groups whose group size matches the full capacity of the unit. For example, to select a Roselawn House, the group must have five members; to select a Fairfax two-bedroom apartment, the group must have three members, etc.

The following upper-class buildings will be open for Winter Break 2024-2025 housing, which is offered at an additional cost of $500 for the Winter Break period. Residents who will require housing over any portion of the Winter Break period must select a room in one of these buildings. All other buildings will remain closed over Winter Break and residents in those buildings will be on their own to find off-campus Winter Break housing. Housing Services does not provide assistance to residents who live in closed buildings and need housing during the Winter Break period.

Housing Options by Roommate Group Size

Options for Residents in a Roommate Group

Residents who are selecting rooms as part of a roommate group generally have a greater number of options than those residents selecting by themselves, since most multi-bedroom apartments and suites are reserved for residents who are a part of a roommate group of friends selecting together.

All of the housing options below are reserved for roommate groups during the first three days of General Room Selection timeslots, and in order to select, the roommate group size must match the number of bed spaces in the unit. For example, a roommate group of 4 would not be able to select an empty Roselawn house, since an empty Roselawn House has 5 beds and is thus only available to groups of 5.

Roommate groups that have only 2 or 3 residents are also eligible to select any double or triple room listed from the options in the "Individual or smaller roommate groups" section to the right.

  • Fairfax Apartments (Groups of 2 or 3) – 2 occupant apartments consisting of one Apartment Double or one Studio Double, 3 occupant apartments consisting of one Apartment Double and one Apartment Single
  • Fifth and Clyde House Suites (Groups 4) – 4 occupant suites consisting of either four Suite Singles, or two Suite Doubles (Note: Fifth and Clyde suites are limited in availability)
  • Fifth Neville Apartments (Groups of 2 or 3) – 2 occupant apartments consisting of one Apartment Double or one Studio Double, 3 occupant apartments consisting of one Apartment Double and one Apartment Single
  • Forbes Beeler Apartments (Groups of 4) - 8 occupant apartments, consisting of two "sides" that consist of 4 residents each; one side generally consists of one double bedroom and two single bedrooms; Units will be filled with 2 separate groups of 4; Read more about the Forbes Beeler Special Selection Process

  • Margaret Morrison Apartments (Groups of 4) – 4 occupant apartments consisting of two Apartment Double bedrooms
  • Morewood Gardens (Groups of 3) - 3 occupant semi-suite triples
  • Neville Apartments (Groups of 3) –3 occupant apartments consisting of one Apartment Double and one Apartment Single bedroom
  • Resnik and West Wing Houses (Groups of 4 or 5) – 4 or 5 occupant suites consisting of a combination of Suite Doubles and Suite Singles

Options for Residents Selecting as Individuals (or smaller roommate groups)

The building options below do not have any requirements to completely fill all beds within the room or unit at the time of selection. Therefore, these options can be selected by students selecting by themselves, or by smaller groups of only 2 or 3 roommate who prefer these building and room type options. Unless otherwise specified on the list of buildings for larger roommate groups, these buildings do not have options for larger sized roommate groups (large groups would need to split into smaller groups).

Note: Selecting as an individual does not mean that the individual will have the unit to themselves. All double occupancy rooms will be filled as doubles, and all triple occupancy rooms will be filled as triples, either through another resident selecting that space, or through consolidations made by Housing Services to maintain adequate numbers of empty units for roommate pairs.
  • Fifth and Clyde Semi-Suites (individuals or groups of 2 or 3) – Semi-Suite Double and Semi-Suite Singles (suite style rooms only available to groups that can fill the unit)
  • Fairfax Apartments (individuals or groups of 2) – 2 occupant apartments consisting of one Apartment Double or one Studio Double
  • Fifth Neville Apartments (individuals or groups of 2) – 2 occupant apartments consisting of one Apartment Double or one Studio Double
  • Morewood Gardens (individuals or groups of 2 or 3) – 2 occupants in a Semi-Suite Double or 3 occupants in a Semi-Suite Triple; limited number of Semi-Suite Singles
  • Resnik and West Wing Houses Semi-Suites (individuals or groups of 2; very limited availability) – 2 occupants in one Semi-Suite Double (Note: West Wing semi-suite doubles typically shares a bathroom with an Resident Assistant in the adjoining semi-suite single room)

All-Gender Housing

All Gender housing provides upper-class students (inclusive of all genders, gender identities, and gender expressions) the opportunity to reside in the same room. Housing Services is working towards making the Room Selection application a more seamless process for students interested in All Gender Housing. Students who are interested in All Gender Housing should first sign the 'All Gender Housing Agreement" available on the "Form" page of the Housing Portal. Once this form is signed, residents who have signed the all-gender form will be able to form roommate groups in the Housing Portal with other residents who signed the all-gender agreement. Timeslots will be issued to all group members who successfully submitted their applications and then the person with the best timeslot should make a virtual appointment with a member of the Room Assignments team to assist in selecting their room(s).

All Gender housing can be made an option in any upper-class buildings. Roommate groups must completely fill the unit being selected, and all members of the roommate group must sign the All-Gender Housing Agreement in advance of forming their all-gender roommate group.

Spirit House Living Community

  • Spirit House: Spirit Organization members who wish to live in Spirit House should talk with organization leadership. Applicants who wish to live in the house should submit a Room Selection application through the Housing Portal by noon on February 20th, and pair up in a roommate group with the individual(s) they will be sharing a bedroom with. Spirit Organization leadership will provide a roster to Housing Services on February 21 with room assignments, at which point those assignments will be made in the system by Housing Services.

Special Accommodations

Housing Services is able to accommodate students with special needs who participate in the Room Selection process. Current residents living in housing for the Spring 2024 semester will be contacted automatically regarding their interest in housing for the 2024-2025 academic year and to discuss whether or not they need continued accommodations. Accommodations extend only to the individual student, and generally do not include roommates, unless the accommodation involves or double or triple room where the resident would be sharing a bedroom with a roommate(s). Current residents with housing accommodations needs who do not work with Housing Services to be assigned to a space that meets their needs during the Room Selection process forfeit their special housing accommodations for the 2024-25 academic year. Limited Availability High Occupancy Units

Housing Service has a limited number of unique, high-occupancy living spaces within the campus housing system that allow for roommate groups of 6. In an effort to create a fair and equitable process for all interested parties, if there is interest from multiple groups, we will be holding a separate "drawing" to determine which groups receive these spaces.

If you have a group of 6 that is interested in one (or more) of these options, please read this section in its entirety for more information on the units as well as the process for requesting to be a part of the drawing. (Note: The deadlines for this special process are earlier than the deadline to apply for Room Selection.)

  •  View Available Options in the Sidebar to the Right

If you have a group of friends that are interested in one (or more) of the high occupancy spaces listed to the right, follow the steps below to be entered into the special lottery process:

  1. Have each individual member of your “submit” a Room Selection application no later than 12 p.m. noon on Monday, February 19, 2024
  2. Have one person (the group leader) email rmassign@andrew.cmu.edu and “cc” all of the members of the group, also no later than 12 p.m. on Monday, February 19, 2024; the number of residents on your email must be 6 total
  3. In that email, confirm your group’s interest in being part of the special lottery and confirm which units you would like to be considered for ranked in order of preference (if requesting to be part of the drawing for more than one unit)

The Process:

Housing Services will confirm that all group members successfully submitted their Room Selection applications, and will then hold a random drawing for each unit based on the groups that requested those units, on the morning of Tuesday, February 20.  All groups will be considered equally for the units they request (there is no special consideration based on class standing or any other factors.)

The group drawn for each space will be notified that morning, and will be provided with a roster of rooms that are part of the unit they received.  The group leader that submitted the request will be asked to respond by 9 a.m. on Wednesday, February 21 with specific room assignments for their group. The assignments will be made by Housing Services and the applications of the residents of that group will be marked as “complete.”  Those residents who are assigned as part of this process will have requests to receive a timeslot withdrawn and their participation in Room Selection will be complete.

Those groups that request but do not receive one of these special units will be notified on Tuesday, February 20.  Those residents will still receive a Room Selection timeslot on Friday, February 23 and can still form smaller, 2 to 5 person roommate groups to participate in the normal Room Selection process the following week.
