Limited Availability High Occupancy Units
Housing Services has a limited number of unique, high-occupancy living spaces within the campus housing system that allow for roommate groups of 6 or more. In an effort to create a fair and equitable process for all interested parties, if multiple groups express interest, we will hold a separate "drawing" to determine which groups receive these spaces.
If you have a group of 6 or more that is interested in one (or more) of these options, please read this section in its entirety for more information on the units as well as the process for requesting to be a part of the drawing. (Note: The deadlines for this special process are earlier than the deadline to apply for Room Selection.)

If you have a group of friends that are interested in one (or more) of the high occupancy spaces listed to the right, follow the steps below to be entered into the special lottery process:
- Have each individual member of your group “submit” a Room Selection application no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026.
- Have one person (the group leader) email rmassign@andrew.cmu.edu and “cc” all of the members of the group, also no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026; the number of residents on your email must match the number of available assignments in a unit.
- In that email, confirm your group’s interest in being part of the special lottery and confirm which units you would like to be considered for, ranked in order of preference (if requesting to be part of the drawing for more than one unit).
The Process:
Housing Services will confirm that all group members successfully submitted their Room Selection applications, and will then hold a random drawing for each unit based on the groups that requested those units, on the morning of Tuesday, February 17. All groups will be considered equally for the units they request (there is no special consideration based on class standing or any other factors).
The group selected for each space will be notified that morning and be provided with a roster of the rooms in the unit they received. The group leader who submitted the request will be asked to respond by 9 a.m. on Wednesday, February 18, with specific room assignments for their group. The assignments will be made by Housing Services, and the applications of the residents of that group will be marked as “complete.” Those residents assigned as part of this process will have their requests to receive a timeslot withdrawn, and their participation in Room Selection will be complete.
Those groups that request but do not receive one of these special units will be notified on Thursday, February 19. Those residents will still receive a Room Selection timeslot on Friday, February 20, and can still form smaller, 2 to 5-person roommate groups to participate in the normal Room Selection process the following week.
NOTE: High Occupancy roommate groups are still expected to fill the entire unit they are seeking. To pursue a unit of 6, your group must consist of 6 residents. Equally, a group of 6 would not qualify to occupy a unit meant for 7 or 8 residents.
