Frequently Asked Questions: Room Selection

If you have a question that you don't see answered here, and you weren't able to find information elsewhere on this site, please email our Room Selection team. Please note that all information here pertains only to Room Selection 2021 and may not be applicable during future Room Selection processes.

Room Selection 2021 will be open to current housing residents and CMU students who are currently living off-campus or at your permanent/home address. If you are a full-time enrolled undergraduate student with a current class standing of 1, 2, or 3 (in SIO), then you're eligible for Room Selection 2021 and for living in university housing for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Given the expanded eligibility for Room Selection 2021, you and your off-campus friend(s) can form a roommate group and select together as long as you both/all meet the eligibility requirements of being a current first-year, sophomore, or junior who is enrolled as a full-time student for spring 2021 and plan to be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate for the full 2021-2022 academic year.

Room Selection is for students interested in selecting a room for the full 2021-2022 academic year, including both the fall and spring semesters. 

Students who only need spring 2022 housing can apply via the Spring Only 2022 application and should not participate in Room Selection.

Students who only want fall 2021 housing can email to be added to a Fall Only waitlist. Fall only contracts will be offered out to interested students after Room Selection has concluded, and after all full-year students have had an opportunity to select their rooms.

We will return to a posture of assigning roommates, with no more than two residents per bedroom. Singles will be assigned as singles, while doubles, triples and quads will all be assigned as doubles.
Single rooms are extremely popular and are thus hard to come by. While we have added single rooms to our inventory through the new residence hall opening at Fifth and Clyde House, single rooms generally fill up quickly during General Room Selection.

Given the atypical pandemic-related circumstances that determined housing assignments in the past year, students are not permitted to retain their current room for next year. All residents will have the opportunity to select a new room (at normal capacity and rates) for the 2021-2022 academic year by applying for Block Housing, Greek Housing or General Room Selection.

If you know for sure that you will be studying abroad during the fall 2021 semester, you should not participate in Room Selection. Instead, complete the "Spring 2022 Only" application through the Housing Portal before you leave campus at the end of the spring 2021 semester. Be sure to select "Return from Study Abroad" as your reason for application. You will be guaranteed a housing assignment when you return in the spring.

If you're not sure whether or not you've been accepted into a study abroad program, then you are welcome to participate in Room Selection to secure a room for the fall semester. However, you will be held to the cancellation deadlines, and depending on when you cancel, may be responsible for paying the $400 housing cancellation fee that will be charged to your fall 2021 student account. If you find out about your study abroad acceptance after the open cancellation period is over, please email Room Assignments to coordinate your housing cancellation so that you are not responsible for the full cost of your housing assignment. You will still be responsible for paying the $400 housing cancellation fee on your fall bill.

Students who will be part-time for fall 2021 are likely not automatically eligible unless they are seniors planning to graduate in the same semester. If you have a special circumstance and you'd like to be considered for a possible exception, please email Room Assignments.

Currently, graduate students will not be eligible for Room Selection. However, please email if you are interested in living in university housing. In the unlikely event that we are able to make housing available to graduate students, we will contact you.
