Upper-Class Move-In Fall 2023

We hope you're excited to start another year at Carnegie Mellon University! You can find all your need-to-know information about moving in here, but feel free to email us with any other questions.

Move-in Dates: Wednesday, August 23, through Sunday, August 27.

Due to traffic restrictions and to minimize congestion in unloading zones, all upper-class residents must sign up for a move-in timeslot through the Housing Portal in late July.

Room Assignment and Roommate Information

Once the information is available, all upper-class students can view their room assignment and the name and email of their roommate(s) under the "My Info" tab of Student Information Online (SIO).

In most cases, only the name of the roommate that you will be sharing a bedroom with will show up in the SIO. In cases of multi-room apartments or suites, the names of your apartment-mates and suite-mates can be viewed in the Housing Portal by clicking on the link located in the "Housing Assignment" section of the portal Home page.

Building Access

Room and building access will be activated on your student ID card at the date and time of your selected move-in timeslot.  Your card will not be activated if you have not signed up for a timeslot.  For details on how to use the electronic locks, please visit the Housing Services Access page.

Students who have lost their ID card will need to visit the HUB to get a new card.

Mail and Packages

As a reminder, all mail and packages must be sent to the residents' SMC box, for pick-up at the Cohen University Center. Under no circumstances should packages be sent directly to the buildings. Packages left outside of buildings are subject to theft and/or will be returned to the sender.

Early Arrival Housing Requests

For security and other logistical reasons, residents are not permitted to check into campus housing before the established check-in dates. If you have an unexpected extenuating circumstance, the early arrival form will be available in the Housing Portal from July 14 through August 16.

Pre-Approved Early Arrival Groups

If you are a member of a fall athletic team, orientation, move-in volunteer or another such group, you do not need to apply for an individual request since group requests were submitted by the coach or advisor. If you have questions about your early arrival status, please contact your coach or group advisor.

If You Are An Individual

The Early Arrival application will be available July 14. We recommend that you submit your request as early as possible for consideration; however, it must be made at least three business days in advance of your requested arrival date. Submissions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and making a request does not guarantee approval. Applications submitted after August 16 will receive an automatic denial.

How to Apply for an Early Arrival

  • Log in to the Housing Portal.
  • Select "Housing Forms"
  • Select the "Fall Early Arrival Request" Form
  • Select a date between August 17 and August 22 and include a detailed reason for your request.
  • Click “submit” to submit your request.
  • You will receive an email acknowledging your application has been received.
  • You will receive a separate email when the status of your request is determined.

Many individuals requesting early arrival move-in are denied with limited exceptions. Residents are provided with the official move-in dates early in the year so that appropriate living and travel arrangements can be made. Please note that residents may not store their belongings in their fall assignment prior to their actual move-in. If students arrive early without pre-approval and gain access to their rooms, they will be charged $100 per night through their student accounts.
