Dietrich College Senior Honors Program Submission Guidelines
As a student completing your thesis in the spring semester, your thesis is due in the Dietrich College Dean’s Office (signed by your thesis advisor and department head) by April 28, 2017. Working backward from this date, work out a timeline with your thesis advisor and department head as to how much time each feels they will need to read through your thesis, offer comments and suggestions, and then sign and send it on to the next reviewer. The first reviewer should be your thesis advisor; the 2nd would be the department head, and the 3rd, the dean. A suggested timeline is below:
- 4/3/2017 – final draft due to your thesis advisor
- 4/17/2017 – due to dept. head for 2nd reading, signed and approved by your thesis advisor
- 4/28/2017 – due to the Dean's Office
QIS honors students – please see submission timeline and registration for Qatar Meeting of the Minds here.
The required elements are as follows:
- hard copy of your thesis
- completed signature page
- signed publishing agreement and electronic version of your thesis (unless you opt out of this agreement- see details under the “Research Showcase” section below)
The hard copy of your thesis should be unbound. Our office does not require a particular manuscript style. Your thesis advisor and/or department may have style/format requirements, however.
The signature page is a cover sheet for your thesis which certifies that it has been approved by your advisor, department head and dean. Signature pages are typically created on official departmental letterhead. You can obtain letterhead from your department. Our sample signature page illustrates the appropriate format and content. Please use this as a guide when creating your signature page (using your department’s letterhead). If you want, you can use the signature page template (Microsoft Word document), inserting your information, and then print it into your department’s letterhead.
You must secure the advisor and department head signatures before submitting your thesis to the dean’s office; however, the Dean's Office will obtain Dietrich College Dean Richard Scheines’ signature for you, so you don’t need to route your thesis to him for approval.
The title of your thesis will appear on your final transcript. Please enter your thesis title in SIO in the “Graduation and Diploma” section (under the “Academic Info” tab).
You are required to present your thesis by participating in the university’s Undergraduate Research Symposium on Reading Day during spring final exams week (this spring taking place on May 10, 2017). Registration in advance (by April 5, 2017) is required. If you are unable to fulfill the presentation requirement via the symposium, you must contact Program Director Joseph Devine to arrange to fulfill it in an alternate way. December grads who will be on campus on the Symposium date should plan to register and present.

Poster or oral presentation?
Either a poster session or an oral presentation will fulfill the presentation requirement of the Dietrich College Senior Honors program.
Please direct any questions on registering to Jen Weidenhof (of the Undergraduate Research Office).
Dietrich College Honors students can choose to have their thesis appear on the University Library’s Research Showcase. http://repository.cmu.edu/
To have your thesis published here, you are required to complete and sign the publishing agreement. By signing this agreement, you give your permission for your thesis to be posted online. You can view recent Dietrich College Honors theses appearing on the showcase here. Please print the agreement, review it, and then complete your section and include it along with your thesis when you submit it to the Dean’s Office. You will also need to submit an electronic version of your thesis. Please review the Digital Preservation Best Practices guidelines for instructions. NOTE: you may, if you choose, opt out of this agreement if you have any concerns about potential restrictions on future publication of your work.
If you successfully complete your senior honors thesis, you will graduate with “College Honors” and will be recognized for this achievement at the college’s Senior Honors Convocation. The Honors Convocations take place on the morning of the Saturday of Commencement weekend, and each college has its own event.
This year's Dietrich College Honors convocation and reception is Saturday May 20, 2017, 9:00 – 10:00 AM in Rangos Hall, Cohon University Center. You and your parents will receive formal invitations to this event.
