Purpose

To assess the number of social groups in which one participates.

Description

Respondents are asked whether they belong to six specific types of social organizations.  A seventh item asks respondents to name one additional organization to which they belong that was not included among the previous six items.

1 = yes, 0 = no

  • Do you belong to a job-related association [such as a business/professional organization or labor union] in which you talk to one or more members of the group about group-related issues at least once every 2 weeks?
  • Do you belong to a recreational group (such as a bowling league, women’s club, card club or golf club in which you talk to one or more members of the group about group-related issues at least once every 2 weeks?
