How long have you been at CMU and how did you get here?
I joined the CMU community in July 2022 as a Career Consultant in the Career & Professional Development Center. While there, I supported Dietrich College students in their career development journeys, which introduced me to the amazing History and humanities students on campus. This led me to my current role as History Advisory & Humanities Coordinator! Before CMU, I worked in career services at Tufts University’s graduate school of nutrition. Prior to that, I worked in the nonprofit sector at organizations focusing on community education, youth workforce development and sustainable food systems.
What was your undergraduate major? How did you end up deciding on it?
When I initially started my undergraduate degree, I didn’t have a strong understanding of what I wanted to do after graduation except work with people, so I landed on Sociology. I loved learning about how people interacted with each other and the big and small social structures around them. I also graduated one course shy of a Religion minor — even though I opted to not complete the minor, I still value the strong humanities education I received through my Religion coursework and how it complimented my Sociology major.
What is a fun or surprising fact about yourself?
I have my master’s degree in Food Studies. I am obsessed with food — cooking it, eating it, reading about it and talking about it (ask me about ketchup sometime!). I love exploring new cuisines, experimenting in the kitchen, perusing farmers markets and noodling in my vegetable garden.
What is a recommendation for a fun thing you like doing in Pittsburgh?
Anytime a friend or family member visits from out of town, I take them to see the Maxo Vanka murals at St. Nicholas’ Church in Millvale. The paintings are incredible and the stories behind them are fascinating — you won’t regret crossing the river to take a tour!
