The Grillo-Marxuach Family Scholarship

This scholarship provides financial support to a first-year or sophomore undergraduate Creative Writing primary or additional major, and the funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, equipment, and other educational expenses, as well as room and board. Each scholarship recipient will receive support for the remainder of their undergraduate career. This award is made possible through the generous donation of CMU and Creative Writing program alumnus Javier Grillo-Marxuach and his family.

Eligibility

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support to undergraduate students enrolled at the University who are majoring in Creative Writing, based on both merit and financial need.

Students must:

  1. have a demonstrated financial need;
  2. be a first-year or sophomore Creative Writing primary or additional major;
  3. have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0;
  4. be U.S. citizens or permanent residents;
  5. show a desire and commitment to achieve a college degree;
  6. be actively involved in serving their community as demonstrated by participation in extracurricular activities, community service, or through work experiences; and
  7. demonstrate social responsibility and a high level of integrity.

Process

  1. A call for the scholarship award will be made in mid-January each year.
  2. Applicants will submit the following materials via an online form:
    1. A personal statement that addresses:
      1. the applicant's desire and commitment to achieve a college degree
      2. the ways in which the applicant is involved in serving their community as demonstrated by participation in extracurricular activities, community service, and/or through work expriences
      3. a time when the applicant demonstrated social responsibility and a high level of integrity
    2. Applicant's current resume or CV
    3. A copy of the applicant's unofficial transcript
  3. The scholarship committee will choose the recipient of the scholarship within one week of the stated application deadline.
  4. The recipient will be notified by early February.
  5. The first payment of the scholarship will be made in the early part of the spring semester.
