Yulin Kuang Wins 2012 Steeltown Film Factory Competition

Recently graduated Carnegie Mellon creative writing major Yulin Kuang is the winner of this year’s Steeltown Film Factory award. The Steeltown Entertainment Project, an organization which seeks to connect and nurture local entertainment industry professionals and hopefuls, gives the award annually to a short original screenplay by an amateur filmmaker. The first-place award includes a cash prize of $15,000 to produce the winning screenplay.

Kuang’s screenplay, “The Perils of Growing Up Flat-Chested,” tells the story of a high school girl who hopes to increase her bust size before a study date with her lab partner. The film is currently in preproduction, and shooting will begin in early July.

“I’m pretty excited,” Kuang said. “It’ll be fun. I produced my screenplay from last year’s competition as my senior thesis project at CMU. I had some resources for that one through the CMU English department. This is the first time I’m working on something with a significantly larger budget, so it should be interesting.”

Kuang was a finalist in the 2011 Steeltown Film Factory competition for her previous screenplay, “First Kiss.”
