Rhetoric Alum Betsy Bowen Named Connecticut Professor of the Year

Betsy Bowen, who earned a Ph.D. in Rhetoric from CMU in 1988, was named the 2010 Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching Connecticut Professor of the Year.

Bowen specializes in rhetoric and composition as a professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at Fairfield University. She is also active with programs promoting community literacy and English education. Her research has been published in journals such as Business Communication Quarterly, Community Literacy Journal, English Education, and Journal of Adult and Adolescent Literacy.

As director of Fairfield's Writing Center, Bowen trains and supervises the university's peer writing tutors. She is also a tutor at Mercy Learning Center, an organization which helps low-income women with literacy and life skills. Fairfield students who take her literacy course engage in service-learning at the Mercy Learning Center.

The Professor of the Year award is given by the Foundation and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Congratulations, Prof. Bowen!
