Bio

During a four-decade journalism career, Steve has worked at newspapers in Pittsburgh, Alaska, Washington and Oregon and he was a member of the Longview, Wash. Daily News staff awarded the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the Mount St. Helens volcanic eruptions. His individual national honors include the AP Managing Editors Public Service Award, the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism, the Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Award and the Education Writers Association’s investigative reporting award. Steve was one of 12 American journalists selected as a Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellow at the University of Michigan for the 1998-99 academic year and was an International Rotary Foundation Journalism Scholar in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1982. He has been teaching at CMU since 2005.
