Group Pin-up Sessions to Construct Research Designs

Lee, J.

Group pin-up and critique sessions are a quintessential form of design pedagogy where students display their work and engage in discussion with a panel of faculty and peers. According to Chi and Wylie, this form of “interactive dialoguing” has the potential to achieve the highest level of engaged learning, but is rarely used in seminar courses. This talk presents two specific tactics and the lessons learned from using group pin-up and critique sessions in a research methods course. Each week students applied their knowledge of a new research paradigm by preparing a research proposal abstract using that strategy. Building upon this work, students prepared Post-it® note diagrams of their proposed research design. The group critique of these diagrams led to many helpful insights from peers and afforded substantial adjustments. Students suggested additional structure and more time to make for these pin-ups even more useful.
