Launch of CMU’s 2023 United Way Campaign

Dear Faculty and Staff,

One of the most meaningful ways Carnegie Mellon impacts the Pittsburgh region is through our enduring partnership with the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania. As we recognize how the current economic climate along with the persistent effects of the pandemic continues to affect people in our region, it is important for our Tartan community to once again mobilize to support the United Way’s critical services and programs, which help our neighbors meet their basic needs, move working families and individuals toward financial stability, and aid children and youth in school and at home.

Today, we launch CMU’s 2023 United Way Campaign, and I hope each of you will consider joining me in participating.

I encourage you to visit the campaign website to learn how you can donate, including by making a one-time gift, a payroll deduction or by participating in a fundraising event like the weekly virtual trivia challenge or Sarris candy sale. You will also find information and answers to questions about directing your donation and the impact of your contributions. For those who pledged during CMU’s 2022 campaign, your monthly donations will continue, though you may update your pledge at any time. This is a great time to review your pledge if you wish to make any changes.

While the work of United Way continues year-round, our 2023 campaign runs for 40 days — from February 13 to March 24 — so please don’t wait to donate.

I extend my sincere gratitude to the campaign’s co-chairs, Jim Garrett, provost and chief academic officer, and Angela Blanton, vice president for finance and chief financial officer, for their continued leadership commitment and strong example. A campaign committee led by the Office of Human Resources and a network of champions in several areas across campus will support Jim and Angela during the 40-day campaign.

This United Way campaign offers yet another opportunity to align with our Strategic Plan 2025 goal of having a positive regional impact. Together as Tartans, our generosity can make a meaningful difference. I am looking forward to continuing our decades-long partnership this year and seeing how we will once again provide critical support to our neighbors during a time of need.

Sincerely,

Farnam Jahanian
