Merit Program and One-Time Payment

Dear Colleagues:

Thank you once again for your commitment to CMU during the current academic year. As we look ahead to the start of AY22-23, I am pleased to share that the university will fund a merit increase program for FY23, whereby merit increases to salaries will be awarded to employees based directly on an employee’s performance evaluation. As in years past, following the completion of the salary planning process, eligible employees will be notified of their FY23 merit increase by their supervisor.

To further support our community during the current inflationary environment, the university is also implementing a one-time payment of $1,500 for all eligible faculty and staff (including Temporary Employment Services staff). The goal is to assist employees in addressing the impacts of inflation that have been so prevalent over the past several months. As you are aware, and as was mentioned during the recent university-wide town halls, we are seeing cost increases across society, including in food prices, at the gas pump, in the cost of energy for our homes, transportation expenses and more. The tragic war in Ukraine and global supply chain disruptions are contributing factors that are driving prices up.

Faculty and staff can expect to receive this one-time distribution on either the final June bi-weekly pay date or the final June monthly pay date. Please note that employees with a pay currency other than USD will receive a foreign currency equivalent payment.

I am grateful to the deans, vice presidents and the leadership in Human Resources, Staff Council and Faculty Senate for all they have done to meet our community’s changing needs during the pandemic. Throughout the past 24 months, the university has collaborated with these and other campus partners to launch creative approaches for additional PTO and COVID floating holidays, affordable child care programs, free PCR and antigen testing on the Pittsburgh campus, and other programs and benefits that prioritize health and well-being in this unprecedented environment. The one-time payment builds on these efforts.

The work of our outstanding staff and faculty continues to strengthen our research and academic missions, support our students, and enhance our reputation and impact. On behalf of the university’s academic and administrative leadership, thank you for all you contribute to our mission and to our community.

Sincerely,

Farnam Jahanian
