Launch of CMU’s 2022 United Way Campaign

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Historically, Carnegie Mellon University’s enduring partnership with United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania has been one of the most significant ways that our Tartan community makes a positive and lasting impact in our region. As communities throughout southwestern Pennsylvania continue to face multiple challenges in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, I am proud our entire campus is once again motivated to mobilize in support of the United Way’s vital services and programs that help meet people’s basic needs in times of crisis, move working families and individuals toward financial stability, and help children and youth build success in school and life.

Yesterday, we launched CMU’s 2022 United Way Campaign, and I hope each of you will join me in participating. I encourage you to visit the campaign website to learn how you can donate, including by means of a one-time gift, through a continuing payroll deduction, or by participating in a fundraising event like the weekly virtual trivia challenge. You will also find information about how you can direct your donation, the impact even the smallest amount can make, and contact information should you have questions. For those who pledged during CMU’s 2021 campaign, your monthly donations will continue, though you may update your pledge at any time. I encourage you to take this opportunity to review your pledge if you wish to make any changes.

I am grateful for the continued commitment and strong example that is set by the campaign’s leadership co-chairs, Jim Garrett, provost and chief academic officer, and Angela Blanton, vice president for finance and chief financial officer. A campaign committee led by the Office of Human Resources and a network of champions in several areas across campus will support Jim and Angela in their work. Our goal for 2022 is to increase participation from last year and ensure that the university’s contributions are responsive to the level of need in the Pittsburgh region. Together as Tartans, our generosity can make a meaningful difference for those in our community who are most in need of support.

While the work of United Way continues year round, our 2022 campaign runs for 40 days — from February 14 to March 25 — so please don’t wait to donate.

I am proud that CMU consistently answers the call when given an opportunity to better our community. This United Way campaign offers yet another opportunity to align with our Strategic Plan 2025 goal of having a positive regional impact. I am looking forward to seeing how we will once again support our neighbors during this time of need.

Sincerely,

Farnam Jahanian
