Celebrating Veterans Day

Dear Members of the University Community,

Tomorrow is Veterans Day, a time to remember and pay tribute to all those who sacrificed for our country, as well as salute all active-duty service members and their families.

It is because of these patriots’ commitment to service that we continue to enjoy the democracy and liberty that define our nation. Their bravery and sacrifice have given institutions like Carnegie Mellon the freedom to commit to academic excellence and to the unfettered pursuit of knowledge.

I am grateful that CMU counts more than 200 veterans, active-duty service members and ROTC midshipmen and cadets among our staff, faculty and students, as well as a multitude of veterans among our CMU alumni who have dedicated great portions of their lives to enhancing our country and community. The university is also active in the development of service members, hosting a Naval ROTC unit on campus and supporting CMU students who participate in Air Force and Army ROTC units at neighboring universities.

To commemorate Veterans Day, the CMU Naval ROTC Unit and our student veterans’ groups will host two events tomorrow, Thursday, November 11. The first is the return of our traditional ceremony at the flagpole on The Cut at 7:50 a.m., and the second is a community blood drive from 12 to 5 p.m. in the Cohon University Center, Rangos 3.

I hope this Veterans Day you will take a moment to recognize those who have defended our nation and have safeguarded our freedoms. In recognizing their service and sacrifice, we celebrate the democratic values that unite us all as Americans.

Sincerely,

Farnam Jahanian
