Carnegie Mellon University

March 9, 2018

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon University Community,

I am honored and privileged to be writing to you as president of Carnegie Mellon University. I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity and for the trust that Chairman Rohr and the Board of Trustees have placed in me.

I was first drawn to this institution by its unconventional approach to boundary-crossing work at the intersection of diverse fields. Carnegie Mellon University, in the dynamic city of Pittsburgh, felt like a place that had its finger on the pulse of the world. I believe that even more today.

This community truly exemplifies the transformative power of research and education to forge new ideas, shape modern culture, enhance the human condition, and address complex problems at the intersection of technology and human life. Each and every one of you contributes to that mission – whether you are a student, a member of our faculty or of our staff, or one of our 105,000 alumni around the world.

Carnegie Mellon has proven that truly exceptional work happens when diverse perspectives come together with mutual respect and understanding. If we remain faithful to these core values, I believe we will continue to blaze new trails, reach new heights, and play a leading role in writing the story of this century.

I look forward to hearing your dreams for shaping the world and the future of CMU – and working with you to make them possible.

Have a wonderful Spring Break,

Farnam
