Graduate Application Requirements

Updated Information June 25, 2021At this time, CMU has not reopened campus buildings for visitors. Those wishing to visit campus may schedule a self-guided walking tour through the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Audition and application information will be updated by August 1 and is anticipated to open August 15. We are waiting for the university to update policies surrounding visitors and events before we can finalize what the Fall 2022 application process will look like. When available, it will be updated on this site and time-stamped. Most audition/portfolio requirements do not change from year to year, so the posted information is likely to be accurate for the Fall 2022 application process. 

All applicants to the Master of Music, Master of Science or Advanced Music Studies Certificate program must complete the following application requirements by December 1. (Fall 2021 Information)

Please be sure to review the audition/portfolio requirements for your program of choice. 

  • Submit the School of Music’s online application.
  • Pay the $125.00 application and audition fee online using a credit card.

All auditions/portfolios will be completed via recording for the 2020-2021 application cycle. Please review requirements for your area. There are no prescreening requirements.

Additional materials must be received by January 4 for your application to be considered:

  • Three letters of recommendation
    (submitted through the online application)
  • Official Transcripts from most recent college/university
    (desired minimum GPA: 3.0)
  • Test Scores: 
    • Students whose native language is not English must submit an official TOEFL, IELTS or DuoLingo score.
      (TOEFL code 2074; Department Humanities - Music 19)
    • Music & Technology (MS) applicants may submit an official GRE score (we are test-optional for the 2020-2021 application cycle).

Current Carnegie Mellon School of Music students must adhere to all of the steps and requirements of the application and admission process to the Artist Diploma without exception. This includes the pre-screening recording and/or materials, which cannot be waived for any reason.
