Music for Non-Majors Registration

Registration for Fall 2025

Please read carefully, as the registration process has changed slightly.

Complete the form below to register for Elective Studio Private lessons or classes. After submitting your form, you must register for your course using the SIO system. You will automatically be waitlisted for the course, and once the Special Music office confirms that you have filled out all of your information, you will be taken off the waitlist and admitted to the course.

Please leave enough units in your schedule to add the course.

If you know who you would like to study with, you may specify that teacher on the form and select their course in SIO.  If you do not know which teacher you would like to study with, indicate that on the form.   In SIO, you will pick the section with TBD as the instructor.  An instructor will be assigned to you, and you will be shifted into their section.

If you are not a CMU student, you will fill out the form and be notified and connected with your professor via email.

Please note:

  • There is a FEE assessed for ALL Music Extension elective studio lessons.  If you are a CMU student, the fee is posted to your student account after the third week of classes.
  • All Music majors and BXA majors whose concentration is in Music and who are taking lessons that are not required as a part of their curricular degree requirements will be charged 50% of the regular cost of elective lessons.
  • Staff wishing to enroll in elective studio lessons and classes should know that Employee Tuition Benefits will NOT cover the Music Extension fee.
  • Non CMU students and CMU staff will be invoiced directly

ELECTIVE STUDIO LESSONS

  • Weekly one-on-one private studio lessons for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students
  • 14 lessons offered per semester: 30, 45, 60 minutes per week
  • Criteria for the lessons will vary depending on the studio teacher
  • Students are expected to participate and prepare for each lesson according to guidelines designated by each instructor. Instructors discuss grading criteria based on skill level and experience at the outset of every semester. Students are invited to participate in an end of the semester recital. At the discretion of the studio teacher, this performance may be required of a more advanced student.
  • CMU students must notify the music extension office if they wish to drop the course during the drop/add period.  You will be charged for any lessons that you take, even if you drop the course.
