Where artistry and innovation share center stage

August 2019

Dear Students,

Welcome to an exciting year in the CMU School of Music. We are facing an exciting year of music making.

CMU Chorus freshmen and sophomore voice majors, other Music School students and all other CMU students will find the sign up on my office door, MM 124, by Tuesday, August 20th. Consideration for the CMU Singers will be included in these auditions.

Please recruit your non-voice major friends who may be interested in auditioning for the CMU Chorus this year (altos, tenors and basses, only please!) You can have them email me directly, or even give me their names and I will contact them.

The Festival Chorus, which includes the junior and senior voice majors, will be singing:

Handel: Messiah, part 1 for the Holiday Concert, December 6 and 10th. Auditions for the solos will be announced later.
Bernstein: Chichester Psalms with Maestro Gerard Schwarz, February 23th.
Mussorgsky/Douglas: Pictures at an Exhibition on April 26th (Freshmen and Sophomore chorus only)

CMU Singers will perform a concert of several styles of Chamber Music in the Fall semester and a concert of the music of Stephen Sondheim in the Spring semester.

57-419 Chorus

The CMU Chorus is a SATB group of all freshman and sophomore voice majors, other music majors, and University students from other schools on campus. The Chorus performs two concerts with the CMU Philharmonic as the Festival Chorus, which includes junior and senior voice majors: the Holiday concert and the Winter Oratorio concert with a prominent guest conductor. The Chorus also performs a spring concert. Recently, they performed a concert of Spirituals and Famous Opera Choruses, the live soundtrack for the showing of the silent film, The Passion of Joan of Arc and Orff’s Carmina Burana Africana. Membership is by audition.

57-422 Singers

The CMU Singers is a specialized group of 12-16 singers, who are also members of the CMU Chorus, who perform music written especially for a small vocal ensemble. These students must demonstrate an advanced level of vocal ability and musicianship to handle the most challenging of vocal repertory suitable for young singers. Membership will be determined by the CMU Chorus audition or by special invitaion.
*Freshman Voice majors will sing a piece of their choice. It is recommended that you choose one of the auditions pieces used to enter the voice department at CMU.

*Sophomore Voice majors will sing a piece from their most recent voice jury.

*Music majors and non-music students will prepare a song of their choice with a fully realized piano accompaniment.

*All students will be required to sight-read. Vocalization may also be required. Please dress appropriately.

Auditions for the CMU Choruses will take place on Tuesday and Thursday, August 27th and 29th from 3:30-6:00 pm in MM 119. Sign up sheets are posted outside the office, MM 124. The first rehearsal of the CMU Chorus will be on Tuesday, September 3rd.
