Goals for the Carnegie Mellon University Psychology Department and Learning Outcomes

By the end of our programs, students should be able to:

Breadth of Knowledge

  • Describe multiple areas  (e.g., social, cognitive, clinical, developmental, computation, philosophy, linguistics, anthropology etc.), including theoretical perspectives, research findings, and their applications
  • Identify theory, research, and applications in related disciplines (e.g., genetics, computer science, engineering, etc.)
  • Explain diverse experimental paradigms used in our majors, psychology, neuroscience and cognitive science and related research areas
  • Discuss the history of our majors within the primary area of study, including the impact of scientific revolutions, theory shifts, etc. on the choice of research questions, methods, etc.
  • Describe ethical issues in conducting research

Depth of Knowledge in at Least One Area

  • Synthesize data and theories in the primary area of study
  • Apply the research methods, experimental designs, and analysis techniques commonly used to investigate questions in the primary field of study
  • Develop and defend a claim in a way that can be communicated

Proficiency in Information Search and Communication

  • Use psychology databases, e.g., PsychLit, Google Scholar, Web of Science
  • Using digital tools in an ethical and appropriate manner
  • Read, critique and fact check disparate sources of information relating to psychology
  • Deliver effective oral presentations
  • Write effectively, using the format suggested by the American Psychological Association and American Medical Association

Proficiency in the Investigation and Analysis of Behavior

  • Design and conduct psychological studies to address research questions
  • Apply knowledge of statistical theory to choice of appropriate analyses
  • Use statistical packages to analyze and interpret data

Dispositions of Curiosity, Critical Thinking, and Enthusiasm for the Field

  • Training in the major contributed positively to subsequent career goals
  • Students actively seek out professional opportunities that reflect the skills they have acquired
  • Students can apply their understanding of research to analyze the methodology and credibility of media, industry, educational and personal claims relating to science
