Children’s School Reopening:
On September 8th, the Children’s School re-opens for in-person instruction at 50% density with four separate groups of three educators and 12 children that stay separate from each other throughout the school day, both indoors and outdoors. As a Pennsylvania Licensed Private Academic School, we share our Reopening Health and Safety Plan for public viewing. We are also supporting home learning for one group, PreKindergarten & Kindergarten Children with remote instruction. Coronavirus Pandemic Closure:
In the spring of 2020, due to the government physical distancing and stay-at-home orders, as well as CMU’s decisions to move instruction online and close campus, the Children’s School closed on March 16th and remained closed for the rest of the semester. Our educators supported young children and families with a variety of developmentally appropriate resources to promote new routines, continued connections, and broad learning opportunities. As a Pennsylvania Licensed Private Academic School, we shared our Continuity of Education Plan for public viewing. In June 2020, we offered a virtual Bugs Camp free of charge via our web site.

The CMU Children’s School is a place for children and adults to learn by doing.

Operating now for over fifty years, the Carnegie Mellon University Children’s School is part of the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences' Department of Psychology and is one of the most popular programs in the Pittsburgh area. The Children's School is a laboratory school that is actively involved in preschool and kindergarten education, developmental research, undergraduate teaching and training of both pre-service and practicing educators. Educators model best practices for early childhood education by designing thematic curriculum for active exploration and equipping parents to extend children’s learning at home.

The Children’s School offers a model half-day preschool and full-day kindergarten program for approximately 100 children ages 3-6, plus an extended morning program for about 24 of those children.  Our program runs from September through mid-May, with the option of a half-day summer camp in June.  The Children’s School has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children since 2003 and licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education since 2014.

With only having 15 percent of its students from CMU-affiliated households, the Children's School is racially and economically diverse. The programs for children, families, researchers, undergraduates and educators prove that an excitement for learning knows no bounds of age.
