Tepper Together: Celebrating Women's History Month

Tepper School of Business / News / Stories / Tepper Together: Celebrating Women's History Month

March is Women’s History Month, a momentous occasion to celebrate the profound impact women have made throughout history, while steadfastly advocating for gender equality across the globe. In this article, we have highlighted events, discussions, and resources across Carnegie Mellon University and in the Pittsburgh community.

Women's History Month began as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28. This law asked the President to declare the week starting March 7, 1982, as "Women’s History Week." For the next five years, Congress continued to pass resolutions setting aside a week in March for this purpose.

Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed more resolutions urging the President to officially name March of each year as Women’s History Month.

Since 1995, every year, U.S. presidents have proclaimed March as "Women’s History Month." These proclamations honor the significant contributions of women to the United States and highlight their specific achievements across various fields throughout American history.

Events Happening This Month

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Penguins Foundation, with the support of 84 Lumber and DICK’S Sporting Goods, will celebrate Women’s History in the month of March. With events happening all month long, there is something to celebrate every woman in your life.

Visit the Penguins' webpage dedicated to Celebrating Women’s History to learn more and find the latest updates for this month-long celebration.

2024 Women's Leadership Conference: Rise with ResilienceWomen's Leadership Conference

Join the Tepper Women in Business and Allies for Gender Equity for the annual Leadership Conference. This year's conference will be held on-campus for the Tepper School community.

This conference provides opportunities for future women leaders and allies to participate in leadership workshops, hear from accomplished Carnegie Mellon alumni, network with Pittsburgh entrepreneurs and executives, and build a community.

Becoming Visible: Bringing American Women's History into FocusBecoming Visible: Bringing American Women's History into Focus

“Becoming Visible: Bringing American Women's History into Focus” is the first digital exhibition from the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum. Audiences are invited into the work of the museum to spotlight how women’s histories have been recorded, remembered, lost, and recovered.

Five remarkable stories of women from the past will come to life through objects from the Smithsonian’s collection, archival records, recorded interviews, and original illustrations and animations.

The event will be held Thursday, March 14 at 3 p.m. EST. Visit the Smithsonian's website for more information and to register.

Additional Resources

The Tepper Together website also has a list of resources — including more books to read, movies to watch, and websites to visit — to better understand the importance of women's history. We have also included local organizations and national resources below.

  • Explore all the resources the National Women’s History Museum has created. There are biographies, posters, primary sources, and more. You can search by topic, theme, or resource type.
  • YWCA Greater Pittsburgh has resources that help you learn and discover ways that are intentional and that subvert the traditional and patriarchal historical record.
