Who is this Program For?

Aspiring and practicing product managers whose skills predate AI systems, and technical professionals moving into product roles. It also fits founders, consultants, and analysts who need to build credibly and explain what they built. You should be comfortable with data and basic technical concepts but you do not need to be a programmer or hold a computer science degree.

Online Curriculum Overview

Across four seven-week courses, you’ll follow an AI product through its full lifecycle: specifying it, developing it, proving it works and operating it, while creating and defending an original portfolio project in each course. You’ll learn to:

Judge whether a problem is suited to AI and recognize when conventional software is the better answer
Build working AI features and agents using low- and no-code tools
Design evaluations, read system traces, and diagnose why an AI system fails
Decide how much authority an AI system should have, and how its work gets verified
Manage the cost, reliability, and governance of an AI product after launch

The result is a product manager who can sit with an engineering team as a participant rather than a spectator, and who can defend a release decision with evidence rather than instinct.

Create your first working AI feature, and learn when AI is not the right solution.

Start by seeing an AI product as a complete system rather than a single model call, and by asking whether the problem suits AI at all. You will specify testable behavior, build one bounded working feature with low- and no-code tools, and handle voice as a serious product surface. The course ends with a working prototype, an honest account of its limits, and a demonstration.

Give a system real knowledge, real tools, and real limits

Extend your feature into a system that draws on approved information and takes action through connected tools — the pattern behind most enterprise AI and back-office automation today. You will decide how much independence the system should have, then write the operating agreement that governs it: what it may decide alone, how its work is verified, when it escalates, and who is accountable when it is wrong.

Prove it works with evidence, not instinct.

AI systems cannot be tested once, because the same input can produce a different answer. You will define what quality means for a specific product and decision, build representative test data, combine human and automated scoring, read traces to find root causes, and deliberately attack the system to find failures before users do. The course ends in a defended recommendation: ship, pilot, revise, or stop.

Run it after launch, where most of the PM’s job actually happens

A system that passed evaluation still has to survive contact with real use. You will instrument it, model what it costs to deliver a successful outcome, release it in stages, detect the silent quality decline that AI products are prone to, rehearse an incident, and ship a real improvement. This is the part of product management that almost no curriculum covers.

Application Requirements

Designed for current and aspiring product managers who don’t need to become AI engineers but do need the technical fluency to evaluate AI opportunities, collaborate with technical teams and make informed product decisions. Successful applicants have:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Comfort working with data and basic technical concepts. You should be able to follow a spreadsheet formula, read a simple script, and understand roughly what an API does.
Experience or exposure to technical concepts and solid foundational math skills. Those without these skills may be required to gain them before they come.
A résumé and a short statement describing what you want to build and why.
Willingness to build. This is a hands-on certificate; you will produce working systems, not essays about them.

A STEM degree, GRE or GMAT, prior management experience, advanced programming are not required for admission.

A $245 technology fee will be assessed each semester (subject to change).
Tuition rates are for the current academic year only. If the certificate is not completed within that time frame, tuition may increase slightly for the following academic year.

All applicants who apply by the priority deadline are eligible for a partial scholarship award; those received later may be eligible if funds are still available. You will be notified at the time of admission of any awards. Scholarships are applied by course and are non-transferrable between courses or semesters.

In addition, Carnegie Mellon alumni are eligible for a fellowship to the graduate certificate worth up to 20% of tuition. Indicate your alumni status within the application to be eligible.

The majority of our students use tuition reimbursement benefits from their company. While some policies won't cover certificate programs, since this certificate is credit-bearing and a verifiable credential, many organizations will allow tuition benefits.

And remember, fall enrollment will maximize benefits since most benefit plans are based on calendar year. Enroll in Fall 2026 and you will use both your 2026 and 2027 benefits to cover the program cost.
