David A. Coulter (BSIM ’71, MSIA ’71) (T)

david-coulter-image.pngDavid Coulter has led an illustrious career in the financial services industry. He was vice chairman, managing director, and senior advisor at Warburg Pincus from 2005-2014 and currently serves as special limited partner.

Previously, he retired as vice chair from J.P. Morgan Chase after five years with the company and spent 22 years at BankAmerica, culminating in his role as Chairman and CEO. He was an active member of the Federal Reserve Advisory Council and International Monetary Conference.

Raised in Ford City, PA, Coulter came to Carnegie Mellon University to earn his undergraduate degree and his master’s at the Tepper School of Business and has demonstrated his deep commitment to the university for decades.

Coulter is currently chair of Carnegie Mellon’s Board of Trustees, having joined in 1997, and a member of the Tepper School’s Business Board of Advisors. He chairs CMU’s Make Possible campaign and was co-chair of the successful Tepper School Quad campaign.

Among many significant commitments, his generous support includes naming the David and Susan Coulter Welcome Center, support of the CMU-Highmark Health, Wellness and Athletics facility, endowing the Department of Mechanical Engineering headship, support for the new Scaife Hall, and collaborating on the NextManufacturing Center.

Coulter additionally has or is currently serving on the boards of several financial services and technology firms as well as philanthropic organizations. 

In 2018, he was honored with the Tepper School's Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award.
