Stay on track with Room Selection.

  1. Verify that you are eligible to participate in Room Selection.
  2. Decide which phase of Room Selection you will participate in. Watch the video if you're unsure.
  3. Be familiar with Room Selection dates and deadlines, and attend the open houses.
  4. Find a roommate or roommates.
  5. Select a room during your designated phase.
  6. Sign your Housing License Agreement (pdf).

Are You Eligible?

In general, you are eligible if ...

You are a current first-year/class 1, sophomore/class 2, and junior/class 3 (in other words, rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors) and live on campus, including Greek housing.

You are studying abroad during the spring semester but lived in campus housing the semester prior to going abroad (just to be sure, email us before February 1 to request/confirm eligibility).

In general, you are NOT eligible if ...

You live off campus, or are a graduate student, an undergraduate who will be a grad student in the fall (including accelerated Master's programs), or a new incoming student who will start at CMU in the fall.

You are a current resident who is a senior (you can make an exception request by emailing us by February 1).

You are on leave of absence, academic suspension, or any other non-enrolled status.

Eligibility Scenarios

I currently live on campus.

If you're currently living on campus or in Greek housing and you're also a current first-year, sophomore, or junior (as defined by SIO), then you're eligible for Room Selection. Greek Housing residents who wish to return to university housing should apply through the Room Selection application. 

If you are a current resident who is a senior, fifth-year senior, or graduate student (as defined by SIO), you are not automatically eligible for Room Selection. Current seniors who will be attending for a fifth undergraduate year can request an exception via email.

I am currently studying abroad, on a Washington Semester, or participating in a registered Co-op.

If you are studying abroad for the spring semester and lived on campus for the fall semester, then you are eligible for Room Selection. You must email us about your intent to return to campus housing. Similarly, if you were abroad for a full academic year and you lived on campus the spring semster before you went abroad, you can also request via email to be made eligible.

I am currently living off-campus.

Room Selection is for current housing residents. Therefore, students who are living off-campus are not eligible for Room Selection. You can apply for the Housing Waitlist (via the Housing Portal) if you need campus housing for the next academic year. Please note that not being eligible for Room Selection means that you cannot be pulled in as a roommate of someone who is eligible.

I am currently on a leave of absence or academic probation.

Students who are currently on leave or suspension are not eligible for Room Selection, but you can apply for the Housing Waitlist (via the Housing Portal) as soon as you have been approved to return from leave/suspension and the appropriate paperwork has been started with your academic department.

Being eligible for Room Selection does not mean that you will automatically be assigned university housing. You must participate in the Room Selection process.

Roommates

Your Room Selection housing options are much greater when you select with a roommate.

Finding roommates through the housing portal is a great option if you don’t already have roommates in mind. You can create a roommate profile and browse and message potential roommates. Once roommates decide they want to live together, they will need to set up a Roommate Group and add themselves to the group.

Additionally, you can browse potential roommates, view compatibility matches, and message back and forth through the Room Selection application. Residents have the ability to hide their information from the roommate search functionality in the Room Selection application if they do not want to be part of the roommate search feature.

For Students Retaining

If you retain your room and don't pull in a roommate (or roommates) to fill the vacancies in your space, then you will likely be consolidated out of your retained space and into a different room, apartment, or suite. If you want to retain your room, be sure to pull-in enough roommates to fill your room.

For Students Participating in General Room Selection

During online General Room Selection, you will generally have more room options available if selecting with a roommate than if selecting by yourself. If you are selecting housing without a roommate and no single rooms are available, you will either need to wait until Extended Selection, select an Open Assignment, or fill a half-filled room, if one is available.

Residents selecting without a roommate also have the option of signing up for an Open Assignment. This is a great option for students who don't have a roommate in mind but are willing to be assigned to spaces as they open up during the Open Cancellation period. In many cases, students with Open Assignments receive better assignments in more preferred buildings than if they selected an available space during General Room Selection (although this is not guaranteed).

Remember, you may find a great roommate by browsing the profiles through the Room Selection application. Sometimes students are retaining and looking for roommates to pull in. Use the Roommate Browse option and Roommate Connections Database with an open mind - you just might find your future roommate!

Assignment Change Wait List

Residents who are interested in obtaining a space other than the one they received during Room Selection may submit their name to the Room Selection Assignment Change Wait List to request a space in another living area that might become available during or after the open cancellation period.

Only residents who have already selected a housing assignment for the 2018–2019 academic year are eligible to submit a Room Selection assignment change form. Assignment change forms will be available online during the week of General Selection through mid-summer and can be submitted at that time.

If you have selected an assignment for the 2018–2019 academic year, you can submit the form on the right to be added to the waitlist.

Assignment change offers begin after all residents with Open Assignments are assigned. Offers are based on class standing and Room Selection number (if applicable) and are made through the summer months as space becomes available.

Students will be contacted when an assignment change offer is available; if you don't hear from us, it means that there is not an assignment change offer for us to give to you. Submitting a change request form does not guarantee an assignment change.
