Information for Undergraduate Business Families
You play an important role in your student’s education and no doubt want to help him or her make the best decisions about college choice, fields of study, and career direction.
We welcome our students’ families to have an active part in the Tepper School community. The CMU Parent and Family website is a great central resource for you to stay connected with your student and the CMU community. Here are ways to learn about supporting students and finding out what is going on in undergraduate business.
Quality of Living
The city of Pittsburgh offers a beautiful, stimulating and safe environment. The city has been named “the most livable city” in the country numerous times, by such publications as Forbes.com, The Economist and the Places Rated Almanac. Pittsburgh truly is a special place with its arts, business, sports and leisure scene, job prospects, safety, and affordability.
Academic Excellence
The Tepper School can claim nine Nobel Prize winners who have either taught or studied at the school. This establishes a legacy of academic excellence matched by few business schools. Distinguished faculty attract talented graduate and undergraduate students, and their interactions create a stimulating intellectual environment of the highest level.
Career Development and Employment
The job market remains strong, with the following companies leading in hiring interns and graduating seniors: BNY Mellon, Boeing, Citi, Deloitte, IBM, PNC and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Academic Advising
Each of our students is assigned to an academic advisor who works with them from the time they enter the Tepper School to their graduation. Our advisers help to enhance a student’s undergraduate experience and provide guidance for developing and achieving meaningful educational, professional and personal goals. We are glad to meet and talk with families when we have the chance.
Student Privacy (FERPA)
Parents who are supportive and offer guidance usually want to know how well their student is performing academically. There is a federal law that guides what information can be released to a parent entitled The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, commonly known as the "Buckley Amendment" or "FERPA." This law protects students' privacy concerning educational records while in college.
