Horn Audition Requirements

All applicants to the horn studio are expected to prepare the following audition requirements:

  • Mozart Concerto No. 2 - 1st movement, exposition and development (or)
    Strauss Concerto No. 1 - 1st & 2nd movements
  • Perform 5 orchestral excerpts:
    • Brahms Symphony No. 1: 1st horn part, 4th movement, introduction calls.
    • Mahler Symphony No. 1: 4th horn part, low tutti, 3rd movement.
    • Strauss Till Eulenspiegel: 1st horn part, both introduction calls.
    • Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5: 1st horn part, 2nd movement solo.
    • Wagner: Short Call.

All performance candidates are required to complete an audition. Note: All solo instrumental auditions are unaccompanied.

All applicants to the gradate horn studio are expected to prepare the follow audition requirements:

    • Solo: Bozza En Foret  - 1st page through "Forte" section top of second page (or)
      Solo: Strauss Concerto No. 2 - 1st movement exposition. 1st page.
    • Perform 4 orchestral excerpts:
      • Beethoven Symphony No. 7: 1st horn part, 1st movement, exposition call.
      • Beethoven Symphony No. 9: 4th horn part, 3rd movement main solo.
      • Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night's Dream: 1st horn part, Nocturne.
      • Strauss Ein Heldenleben: 1st horn part, introduction call.

All performance candidates are required to complete an audition. Note: All solo instrumental auditions are unaccompanied.

All applicants to the horn studio are expected to perform an audition recital of 15-20 minutes, including a minimum of five works showing representative repertoire of various periods. Although there are no set requirements for this audition, please refer to the graduate audition requirements for guidelines.
