Bio
Victoria Luperi is an Argentine-American clarinetist. In 2016, she was appointed Associate Principal Clarinet and Principal E-flat Clarinet of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra by Music Director Manfred Honeck, following previous appointments as Principal Clarinet with the Fort Worth and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras. Since 2014, she has performed in the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson, Wyoming.
As a soloist, Victoria has appeared with numerous ensembles, including the Pittsburgh Symphony, Madison Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, Winnipeg Symphony, Córdoba Symphony, Córdoba Chamber Orchestra, Signature Symphony (Tulsa), Debut Orchestra (Los Angeles), and the Philharmonia of Kansas City. She premiered Fantasía sobre Yma Sumac, a work for solo clarinet and orchestra written for her by composer John B Hedges.
A committed chamber musician, Victoria has collaborated with members of the Emerson and Guarneri Quartets and performed at renowned festivals such as Marlboro, Mainly Mozart, Mimir, the Oregon Bach Festival, Académie musicale de Villecroze (France), Chicago’s Latino Music Festival, and the Jackson Hole Chamber Music Series. She recently premiered Canzoni di Fiori, a work for two E-flat clarinets and string quartet by Till Meyn, composed for her.
Currently, Victoria serves as Artist Lecturer in Clarinet at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music. She has previously held teaching positions at the University of Texas at Austin (Lecturer), Texas Christian University (Adjunct Faculty), and Brandon University in Canada. She has also taught at the New York Summer Music Festival, Filarmónica Joven de Colombia, the Buffet Crampon USA Academy, NOI+F, and Carnegie Hall’s NYO-USA. She has served on juries for the Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition and the 2022 Carl Nielsen International Clarinet Competition in Odense, Denmark.
Victoria is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Donald Montanaro. She began her music education in Argentina with Oscar Gieco, and later studied with Richard Hawkins at the Interlochen Arts Academy and Yehuda Gilad at the University of Southern California. Distinctions include First Prize in the Pasadena Instrumental Competition, the Interlochen Fine Arts Award, and the Banco Mayo Award of Buenos Aires. She has appeared in broadcasts on NPR’s Performance Today, WQED, WRR 101.1, WFMT, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Victoria is a Vandoren Artist and Clinician, and a Buffet Crampon USA Performing Artist. She proudly served on the research and development team of Buffet Crampon’s “Tradition” clarinet model.
She is married to conductor and nonprofit executive Andrés Franco. In her spare time, Victoria enjoys hiking, reading, traveling, and making chocolates—as a certified chocolatier.
