Euphonium Audition Requirements

Undergraduate
All undergraduate applicants to the Euphonium studio are expected to prepare the following audition requirements:
- A technical etude and a lyrical etude OR A solo composition of the applicant’s choice that will demonstrate their musical and technical level of achievement
- The entire euphonium part for John Phillip Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever
- The entire euphonium part for Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F
- All major and minor scales
All performance candidates are required to complete an audition. Note: All solo instrumental auditions are unaccompanied.
Graduate
All graduate applicants to the euphonium studio are expected to perform an audition recital of 20 minutes. Please choose at a minimum:
- A contest solo (Theme and Variations, or Rhapsody a la Sparke or Clarke)
- The first movement of a standard euphonium concerto (Cosma, Horovitz, Linkola, Ellerby, etc)
- A melodic transcription from a non-brass instrument (Faure Elegie, Ravel Habanera, Rachmaninoff Vocalise, etc)
- Three contrasting excerpts from the standard concert band repertoire.
All performance candidates are required to complete an audition. Note: All solo instrumental auditions are unaccompanied.
Certificate
All Advanced Music Studies Certificate (AMSC) applicants to the Euphonium studio are expected to perform an audition recital of 15-20 minutes, including a minimum of five works showing representative repertoire of various periods. Although there are no set requirements for this audition, please choose:
- A solo piece
- A movement from a concerto
- A song or melody of the player's choice. This can be a folk song, art song, pop song, original composition, or a song from a movie or Broadway show.
- Etudes that show tone, musicianship, and technique.
- Know that you may also be asked for major and minor scales.
