Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit

Home / Campus Life / Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit

What CMU Community Members Need to Know

President Donald Trump is expected to attend a national Energy and Innovation Summit hosted on the CMU campus on Tuesday, July 15. This Summit, convened by Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. David McCormick, will bring together leaders from government, industry and academia for a day of conversations on technology, innovation and national strategy.

This page is intended to provide information for our campus and community that will be important to know as we host this high-level event, which we do expect will create significant disruptions to campus operations from Monday afternoon, July 14, through Tuesday, July 15. Details will not be finalized until closer to the event. We will update this page with more information as it becomes available.

Road Closures, Parking and Transportation

Significant road closures are expected on or around July 15. Some parking areas will be closed or inaccessible. Transportation Services will communicate directly with affected permit holders once those are determined. Shuttle routes may be adjusted or suspended due to road closures. Check the shuttle schedule page and bus tracker app and for route changes.

Remote Work and Classes

Due to the anticipated disruptions, the university is offering faculty and staff whose job duties do not require them to be on the main campus in Pittsburgh the option of working from home on July 15. Staff should coordinate remote work plans with their immediate supervisor.

Summer classes will take place as scheduled July 15; however, the Provost’s Office has encouraged instructors to assess whether their class can be delivered remotely and consider shifting to that format. Instructors will communicate directly with students regarding class format.

Building Access and Closures

We expect one or more campus buildings will be closed and inaccessible, even to ID card holders, while other campus buildings likely will be ID-access only the afternoon of July 14 and all day July 15. Carry your CMU ID with you on campus.

Cyert Center for Early Education

The Morewood Avenue location of the Cyert Center for Early Education will be closed July 15. A limited number of children may be able to transfer to the Penn Avenue location, which will remain open. Cyert Center staff will communicate changes directly to parents of enrolled children.

Pre-College Programs and Summer Camps

Pre-College and summer camp staff will communicate any schedule or program changes directly to enrolled students and their families.

Visitors and Events

The Coulter Welcome Center in the Tepper building will be closed, and there will be no in-person admissions events or campus tours on July 15. Those hosting on-campus events or meetings with visitors on July 15 should expect logistical challenges and plan accordingly.

Safety

The summit is an invitation-only event and not open to the public. Pre-clearances will be required for participants and invited guests.

A few general safety precautions: Please don’t allow anyone you don’t know into CMU buildings. Consider reviewing our university community’s commitment to free expression and civil discourse. Report any suspicious activity or safety concerns immediately to the CMU Police at 412-268-2323.

For Media Outlets

Carnegie Mellon University is not handling access for media members to the Summit. Media members seeking credentials and/or additional details for the event should contact the office of U.S. Sen. David McCormick at energyrsvp@mccormick.senate.gov. All credential requests must be made by 5 p.m. on July 7.
