This is the fourth edition of the Mellon College of Science (MCS) Faculty Handbook. The MCS Faculty Handbook complements the University Faculty Handbook. It presents College documents and policies that concern the organization of the College and its faculty, and that affect the status and responsibilities of regular, research, and special faculty members in the College. All of the policies and documents presented here have been approved by the Dean, the College Council, or the MCS Faculty Organization. These policies are in effect as of 27 April 1995.

This Handbook will be updated from time to time by issuing Handbook supplements.

The documents and policies in this Handbook complement, and are subordinate to, University documents and policies. Most of the relevant University documents and policies are collected in the University's Faculty Handbook (currently the September 1993 edition - but some of the contents have since been amended). Additional policies are published in the current Student Handbook and the current Carnegie Mellon Undergraduate Catalog, as well as in the Organization Announcements issued by the President. If a provision in a College document or policy conflicts with a provision in a University document or policy, the University provision takes precedence. Any such inconsistencies detected by members of the faculty should be reported immediately to the Dean. Reference to the relevant University document has been made in this Handbook whenever appropriate.

Faculty members should become acquainted with University-wide administrative policies, procedures, and guidelines. While a few are recorded in the University's Faculty Handbook under "University Policies" (e.g., the Travel Policy), others are not. Among the latter are: personnel and benefit policies for staff; accounting and payroll procedures; the Purchasing Policy; and the University/Personal Property Policy. (A University Administrative Policies and Procedures Manual is in preparation.) The Mellon College of Science also has set some administrative procedures, notably the proposal guidelines. For information on all these matters, please consult your Department Head or your Department Administrator.

Please address all questions, suggestions, and comments regarding the contents of this Handbook or its presentation to the Office of the Dean or to the Chair of the Faculty Organization. Additional copies of this Handbook are available from the Office of the Dean.

There remain in this Handbook a few instances where the pronoun "he" is used as defined in Webster's Third New International Dictionary to mean "that one whose sex is unknown or immaterial"; that is, to signify a person, either male or female. It is intended to amend the respective documents to avoid this usage.
