    2025 Pulitzer Prize

    CMU professor Edda Fields-Black has won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in History for her book COMBEE: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid and Black Freedom during the Civil War, which recounts Tubman's leadership in liberating over 700 enslaved people in 1863.

Patience Whitworth.

Patience Whitworth, Ph.D.

Patience Whitworth serves at the associate vice provost for student success and strategic initiatives for the Office of the Provost at Carnegie Mellon University. In this role, Whitworth supports efforts guided by the university’s student success steering committee and the day-to-day operations of the Student Academic Success Center. Whitworth also provides support for the provost’s strategic initiatives, including partnerships with offices of vice provosts and other reporting units, deans, department heads, faculty, students, community, university and external organizations.

First joining Carnegie Mellon as the director of the Office of the Vice Provost for Education, Whitworth served on the accreditation leadership team, provided administration oversight of the new academic programs process, and coordinated academic leadership efforts in support of student success and inclusive excellence.

Previously, Whitworth was the assistant dean of students in the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Vermont (UVM) where she led divisional assessment and strategic planning and coordinated the graduate assistantships in partnerships with the Higher Education and Student Affairs program. Prior to UVM, she served as assistant director of student life research and planning at The Ohio State University.

Whitworth’s research focuses on the application of restorative practices in higher education, and she currently serves on the International Institute of Restorative Practices board of trustees. She currently serves as vice president of the national council of the Mortar Board National Honor Society.

Whitworth earned both her master’s degree in educational policy and leadership and her bachelor’s degree in business administration at The Ohio State University. She also holds a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Leadership from the University of Vermont.
