Celebrating Independence Day and Our CMU Community
Wednesday, July 1, 2026
Dear Members of the CMU Community:
With Independence Day drawing near, I want to wish you and your loved ones a happy and safe Fourth of July.
This year's holiday commemorates the 250th anniversary of our country's founding, reminding us that democracy is not something we inherit once and for all. It is strengthened through the ongoing work of each generation and by our shared commitment to individual freedom, equality and service to the common good. As our founding fathers and historians have observed: The Declaration of Independence is "the oldest assertion of our national aspiration" and the "North Star" of the American Dream. Democracy is the machinery that we built to try and make that dream real.
This milestone is also a time to appreciate the important role discovery, creativity and civic engagement continue to play in shaping our nation's future. As someone who came to the United States as a teenager in pursuit of an education and the opportunities this country makes possible, I am personally grateful for the chance to embark on a life of purpose here through learning, research and service.
I am also grateful to be part of a leading U.S. university that brings together talented people from around the world. Whether you were born in the United States or chose to study, teach or conduct research at one of our campuses, every member of our Carnegie Mellon University community is helping to write the next incredible chapter in America’s story. You give me every reason to believe our nation's best days are still ahead.
Thank you, Tartans, for all the ways you continue to advance our academic and research missions. Whether you are soon traveling, connecting with family and friends, enjoying local celebrations or simply taking time to recharge, I hope the extended weekend offers you an opportunity for rest, renewal and reflection.
Happy Fourth of July!
Farnam
