Brownfields Identification - Cards

The following pages contain images of slides that are used in the Brownfields Identification Activities. All photographic images for this project were collected in and around the city of Pittsburgh. The cards list hypothetical contaminants that might be found on the properties that are shown. Through this activity students gain an understanding of the scope of the brownfield problem; it is not limited to urban areas. They also learn that brownfields are the result of prior use of the land, and that brownfields can come from a variety of industrial, agricultural, and retail uses.

Students may use the PowerPoint slides on the computer, or the teacher may print the cards to distribute to groups in the classroom (see packet clipped to the binder). Students review the types of contaminants found on the lot and consult the Contamination Guide to determine the probable prior use of the land.
