Carnegie Mellon University
The Gelfand Center provides information about programs that are provided by several academic departments and offices at Carnegie Mellon. Please see the Professional Development Programs or the Outreach Activities Calendar to learn about upcoming programs.
Our programs are typically not credit-bearing. Educators who hold Pennsylvania certification can earn Act 48 hours for full participation in programs. Educators from other states can obtain a confirmation of participation that they can submit to the administrators in their school district.
Each program is operated separately by the sponsoring department. Many of our educational programs are supported by grants from foundations, companies, or national organizations and are provided at no cost to educators; however, there may be a fee for some programs.
K-12 populations are frequent visitors to the Carnegie Mellon campus; however, it is necessary to request assistance in planning these events well in advance of your planned visit. Individual departments or centers may be able to accommodate requests for tours or educational programs but safety is always a concern and it is not always possible to fulfill each request that is received.
We receive many requests to have speakers come to schools for career fairs and other events. Please make requests well in advance and we can work to identify people who are available for your program; however, on-campus commitments and schedules of our faculty and graduate students may make it difficult to provide speakers on specific dates.  Carnegie Mellon also ensures that all affilited presenters have PA Act 153 clearances, so that may limit the availability of some potential speakers.
