Bio

Hailed by The Washington Post for his “deep sensitivity and masterful touch,” William Woodard is a pianist, vocal coach, conductor, and educator whose career has taken him to leading opera companies and music festivals throughout the United States and abroad. He is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Music at Carnegie Mellon University, where he works with singers and collaborative pianists in the School of Music.

Woodard has served on the music staffs of Houston Grand Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Washington National Opera, Washington Concert Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and New Orleans Opera, working in a wide variety of capacities including vocal coach, répétiteur, and orchestral pianist/continuo player. He also has a long-standing relationship with Wolf Trap Opera, where he has served as Chorus Master, Principle Coach and Cover Conductor for multiple productions. These experiences have allowed him to work alongside a wide range of conductors, stage directors, singers, and artistic leadership, and have shaped his collaborative and communicative approach to music-making.

A dedicated mentor of emerging artists, Woodard has coached young singers and pianists at Houston Grand Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. He is particularly passionate about helping young artists develop the musical, linguistic, and collaborative skills necessary to build sustainable careers in the performing arts. His approach to coaching emphasizes stylistic fluency, linguistic clarity, musical curiosity, and the integration of technical preparation with expressive and dramatic intent.

Woodard is an alumnus of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and Washington National Opera’s Cafritz Young Artist Program. He is also an alumnus of the Merola Opera Program, Aspen Music Festival, SongFest, and AIMS in Graz, where he was awarded the Outstanding Lieder Pianist Prize. His own training and professional experiences across these programs have given him a broad perspective on the development of young artists and the transition from conservatory training to professional performance.

Woodard maintains an active recital career and has appeared with leading operatic singers in venues and series including Vocal Arts DC at the Kennedy Center, Renée Fleming’s SongStudio at Carnegie Hall, Cincinnati Song Initiative, the New Orleans Opera Association, and Brooklyn Art Song Society.

Woodard holds a Master of Music in Vocal Accompanying from the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Warren Jones. He is passionate about the intersection of professional performance and education and looks forward to bringing his experience to his work with the students and artistic community at Carnegie Mellon University.
